Computer "lags" SSD

Hi all, I have a Crucial M4 - 128GB SSD Firmware 0009. I use it as my windows OS Drive. the rest of my stuff like non-crucial ( no pun intended) applications etc installed on 3 other hard drives.

From time to time, windows for lack of a better word, "freezes" for like 2-5 minutes before it resumes what it was doing. Any ideas? I just updated my JMicron JMX36-er something SATA Controller to the latest version so I am unsure if that would have fixed it.

Any thoughts? This is my first Foray into the world of SSD and so far i am not impressed if this is what I have to look forward to.

Is indexing, defrag, search, superfetch turned off on the drive?

Was Windows installed fresh on the SSD? Using AHCI? Idk... If Windows "freezes" for 2-5 minutes it sounds like a more serious problem then what I'm mentioning fixes for. Could be a bad SSD or a bad install.

i dont vthink it is ahci. im pretty sure it is ide. I installed on SSD with no other drives attached during install. I'm hoping updating the JMicron controller fixed it as the driver being used was from January 2010. I updated to August 2011. It also happens sporadically.

You may want to try the Crucial forums. This could be a dying SSD or just a terrible case of stuttering. Give this thread a quick read and see if it does any good: http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Solid-St...ate/td-p/48596

Thanks, i hope it is not a bad drive. The drive is about 1 month old. I read the post and the problem i run into is that i run AMD not intel so I don't know if it has the LPM feature to turn off.

Try this: Elpamsoft.com - SSD Home Page (http://elpamsoft.com/Downloads.aspx?Name=SSD%20Tweaker)

Just use the auto-tweak, then reboot.

If that doesn't do it, reinstall Windows and make sure to do it in AHCI mode.

If that doesn't do it, RMA time.

If it is that the SSD is dying. Id stay away from Crucial in the future. Im hearing more and more horror stories about them and their SSDs that like to die so much and i cant ignore it anymore.

Most if not all SSD manufacturers recommend using AHCI. It should be in the instructions. As far as the difference between the two, that is easily searchable on the internet. With AHCI you may get some speed improvements.

also, TRIM commands cant be enabled in IDE mode.you need AHCI for that.
could this lag be the garbage collection that is working overtime in absence of TRIM?

The stutters are probably just controller stalls

AHCI w/ NCQ will help out

NAND Flash lasts pretty much forever 64GB MLC(2bit) has an average life expectancy of 100+ years

What mostly dies on these SSDs are the Controllers(Still a long average life expectancy 5-10 years)

(SSD problems are more likely User and OS/BIOS problems)

You definitely need AHCI for TRIM. You may need to reinstall the OS with it enabled in BIOS. I would back up all your data first before experimenting.

thanks for the info. Im probably going to reload with AHCI enabled. It works generally well now except when watching a video from one of my other drives. when it periodically lags on the movie. Odd odd
