Verbatim 2TB works on one pc but not on another?
I need a bit of help on this.
So my dad bought this external HDD for use mainly on his laptop which is an MSI GT640. It doesn't work on his laptop. He gets the message at bottom right "installing device driver software" and then a failure. He tried 99 times and testing out all different usb sockets. On the other hand we tried this external HDD on one of the desktop pc's at our work and it worked perfectly. ![]() What gives here? Here are the specs of the laptop (where drive doesn't work): Intel I7-720QM, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HDD NVIDIA GTS 250M 1GB GDDR3 Win7 Home Premium x86 And here are the specs of the desktop (where drive works fine): E7500 core 2 duo 2GB DDR2 320GB HDD some onboard graphics.. Win7 Professional x86 |

The obvious question...
If it has a power brick, is he using it? It may be possible the laptop is not giving the required power to run the drive on the ports alone. |

The drive wouldn't power up without the power brick. |

Well, then, tell him to try:
1. Hooking it up to the desktop and dis-able the (ECO)green functions and, then, try it on the laptop. 2. Look in the laptops bios for any USB settings for legacy devices, (en/dis)-able USB ports, etc. < might be a bios settings, just guessing, 'cause I don't know what his bios is capable of. 3. Connect it to the desktop and run a chkdsk on the drive. 4. Hook the drive to the desktop and try a full format on it... if it fails, RMA the drive. And, get him to look and make sure the drive is showing the proper capacity. 5. May want to hook it up to laptop, be online, find the device in the device manager, click on the properties, click on the update driver and let windows search. 6. He may want to go to the laptop or manufacturer's website and download/install the latest chipset drivers, bios updates or firmware. These are all shots in the dark and not in any order. Do other USB devices work properly on the laptop? Last edited by 95Viper; Oct 8, 2011 at 08:09 PM. |

Did he check device manager and manually uninstall any weird driver that got installed improperly for it? Can he update his USB 3.0 drivers (depending on whatever chipset the laptop uses)? I would assume you've already been through these with him, though.

could it be the amount of power going through the USB port itself?

Today he took both drive and laptop to the retailer of the drive.
The tech tried a lot of drives, even pendrives. They won't work on his laptop. His 'diagnosis' was that the laptop's got some kind of software installed on it recently which is preventing it from accepting new hardware. I never heard of this and the laptop's virus and malware free (scanned with malwarebytes and with MSE).He said we need to format the laptop. What do you think?

What does device manager say when you plug them?
Does a USB mouse, keyboard or webcam works or only affects storage devices? I wouldn't take that "drastic" step of formating it, I think that some things can be done before
