Rapid aging casued by mystery allergy

A 26-year-old Vietnamese woman has left doctors baffled as she lost her once youthful appearance.

Nguyen Thi Phuong believes that an allergic reaction to seafood she ate in 2008, caused the skin over her face and body to sag and wrinkle. It has come to light now, as she has shown her face in public for the first time since it happened.

Her story has led health experts to question what could have triggered her rapid aging as pictures show Phuong looking like two different people.

Mrs Nguyen had been treating herself with various types of medication, from a local pharmacy as she and her husband could not afford to have her examined at a hospital

The effect of aging on skin is that it loses it's elasticity (ability to bounce back to its original position). I highly doubt there is any way to effectively treat it except cosmetic surgery (tugging) but considering her condition, I doubt it would do much/any good. On the bright side, good researchers might be able to find the trigger that causes elasticity to be lost and find an effective way to slow and/or prevent that sign of aging.

What causes aging in the first place is largely a mystery.

Always the Vietnamese isn't it.. I remember a few years back there was a story about an old farmer who hadn't slept for like 40 years after a really bad fever.

What causes aging in the first place is largely a mystery.

I always thought it was caused by read errors in DNA. As cells die and get replaced, read errors make the replacement slightly worse than the last, ergo aging.

I thought aging was basically the Zerox effect...a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy....each cycle is slightly less perfect.
