What cards is it 'overclocking'? Why is it selective (slower cards only?)? Proof of clockspeed changes?

Something.
Yes, it sounds very strange and unlikely that a game would overclock a card and then hide the fact it's doing it. This could potentially land them with lawsuits for damaged hardware.

Heck, I've never heard of a game doing any overclocking, ever.

Guys, I know it sounds retarded but the only thing I've done different was down clock my GPU and remove the "tm" from the registry entries and once I did that, I haven't crashed. I'm not saying this is the answer to all your prayers, all I'm saying is this did work for me.

EDIT: Here is the link where I found it, it's a ways down and one user (Arturas) posted it. I tried it and it worked for me.

I believe you.

Anyone experiencing these problems care to give this a go?

I buy the solution, but don't buy for a second that its changing the clockspeed of the videocard. There may be something borked in tv dx11 path or something along those lines...no clue. The only thing im confident in is that its not changing clockspeed...LOL!

Try the drivers first without clocking back. Dont believe that crap about the game overclocking the card as its unsubstantiated at this point in time.

Wait wait wait... you said you did that already:

Ok, so I tried the new drivers and they are indeed better. I was able to play for almost 3hrs with no crash. I finally had my first one. Not so much of a crash really. It kicked me to the desktop with the game running in the background but you can't get back to the game no matter what you do. You have to kill the process from within the task manager... Sooooooo,,, it is a beta driver but is better than nothing at this point.

Thats good. Doesnt prove its overclocking anything, but thats good.

Try just adding .05v to your stock clocks now...

Update. I've been playing all day with my GPU down-clocked to 730 from 780 and I haven't had one crash. Not sure what the real issue is but hey, for now it works.

Perhaps you have a faulty card? If the heatsink isn't on properly, or the thermal paste isn't good, you can get a hotspot that causes this. There could be lots of other things wrong with it too, of course, but this you could potentially fix.

Have you checked the running temp of the card. There's various utilities for this, including nvidia's own system monitor.

Nope... I've never had a problem with any other game and still don't, ONLY BF3. It looks like Nvidia is trying to fix the issue though. The beta driver does work better but still not 100%

Ok, driver issue it is then. I remember how Duke Nukem Forever screwed up horribly, unless I installed the driver released at the same time.

Damn, I get the problem with my MSI TFII GTX470 at stock speeds. Mostly, I get it when playing APB Reloaded and I just hear the "du dum" sound that Windows makes when you disconnect something. That's the only way I know that it's happened.

Sometimes, I get it when opening MSI Afterburner, GPU-Z and HWMonitor at the same time.

Today i got the biggest problem with my card... After switching on the PC (in the morning) i got a black screen (no signal detected on monitor), i switched the cable from 1st DVi to 2nd DVI and tried the mHDMI as well, nothing happened. After this, seeing that nothing happening, i cleared the CMOS (BIOS) and still nothing happened... I switched the GPU to onBoard (ATI HD4250) and everything was OK this way (this way i seen that the problem isn't from the cable or monitor)... I uninstalled the new nVidia drivers 285.79 BETA, and entered in BIOS, switched over the display at pci-express an VOILA, the GTX 560 Ti come ALIVE.... Now i using the old drivers 280.26 and for a couple of hours everything is OK for now...

STRANGE... NO ?!
