Rumour: dual GPU AMD 7990 out in March

Guru3d brings us news that the dual GPU AMD 7990 might be out in March. However, it's just a rumour, there's no source cited and a quick google didn't turn up anything, so it doesn't seem solid enough to post as news, therefore I've put it here.

Speculate away people.

First January, but now its March. It's pretty save to state that the Radeon HD 7900 series cards will be released early 2012, maybe even January. However we have not even crossed that point yet already we are seeing rumors that the dual-GPU Radeon HD 7990 would be launched in March, which would be CeBIT time.

The 7990 is based on the Tahiti GPU which would be two Radeon HD 7970 or HD 7950 cores.

The Radeon HD 7990 will most probably also use the new liquid chamber cooling solution that AMD said previously that it will be included in the HD 7970 and HD 7950 reference designs.

According to the Sunnyvale-based chip maker, this brings a series of improvements over the old vapor chamber technology, while also being easier to manufacture. Radeon HD 7900-series cards use AMD's Next Generation Core (NGC) architecture that was designed to offer improved performance and functionality in GPGPU environment.

Before coming out with the dual-GPU Radeon HD 7990, AMD will release not just the HD 7970 and HD 7950, but also a series of mid-range models manufactured using TSMC's 28nm production node.

These will feature the VLIW4 (very-long instruction word) architecture introduced with the Radeon HD 6900-series GPUs.

Nvidia's next-generation graphics cores, code-name Kepler, which are built using the same 28nm TSMC fabrication node, will also arrive in 2012 and will be officially announced in December of this year, according to a recent report.

Alright. I've also heard that the 4 GPU limit has been raised to 8, so now you can quad Crossfire 7990's.

Just imagine the power consumption of a system like that running flat out!

I saw some chart the other day that had all the lower end cards being released in December, 7950/7970 in January and the 7990 in March. Of course, it's all rumor. It could of been started by anyone so as far as I know, there will most likely be a 7 series for AMD and it will most likely be released by the end of time.

Well, at least it's a plausible. You can let yourself "believe" a little more when rumoring about AMD's GPUs

I keep hearing wispers that AMD may have changed the naming to support a Tri-GPU card that is suppose to also get released due to the 28nm process allowing it. Anyhow, this is what I read.

Replacement Parts:
HD 6950 - HD 7850
HD 6970 - HD 7870
HD 6990 - HD 7970 (Dual-GPU)
-------- - HD 7990 (Tri-GPU)

Donanimhaber - Rumours close to the original ATI have claimed a possible tri-core will be allowed by third party companies such as Sapphire, XFX and ASUS. Tri-Core HD 7000 card. So it seems they may go back to naming the high end as HD 7850 and HD 7870 with the Dual GPU card being named HD 7970 and the Tri-GPU as HD 7990. This was only possible with the 28nm Process. The Tri-GPU also supports the fact most AM3+ mobo's are indead Tri- CrossfireX and not Quad- CrossfireX.

For those amd fanboys be happy there are specs for new gfx , for nvidia there is nothing!

It may not be impossible to bring out a tri GPU card, due to the 28nm die shrink there is less heat to dissipate which if the speed of each GPU is set low enough, we could definitely see a triple gpu card next year.
