Diary of a 1st gen i7 build....
I now have both an Asus Rampage II gene, and a P6T. Currently working on my my Rampage. I had an ES version of the W3570, which is equivalent to the i7 965x but unfortunately, it was ES silicon, so only did 3.8ghz stable. With my current i7 950, I can use mostly auto settings, but crank the vcore to 1.3v, and increase cpu pll by a couple of marks. Doing 4.0ghz stable now. Would like to find out other's experience using water cooling with 1st gen i7s, and how much can that help, and how much to buy 2nd hand the equipment?

I dont know I pushed the 222 bclk limit when i decide to OC.
Anything less is undignified  Fro a 24/7 Oc, you might need to boost qpi and a ioh vcore, let alone ICHIO voltage. dunno never 24/7 oced. found it unnecessary back then Limiting factor on x58 was the qpi voltage specially with high speed ram. Find that and everything else is easy (at high bclk though all i listed above is as important, and IOH vcore especially, as it provides voltage to everything on chip ans well as chip voltage. keep an eye on your chipset temps... even finger testing will tell you) ioh and ich Last edited by Neuromancer; Nov 17, 2011 at 06:24 AM. |

I've already boosted ioh and pll volts, don't have to increase anything else. I'm now working my vcore down, as even at 4ghz, this thing is pumping out the heat! I need a water cooling setup asap. But this DO stepping is amazing, it wants to go well above 4ghz... I just need the cooling for it!

Well, I found out why being a smoker is bad... after a few years its turns out I needed to scrub my fan filters with commercial degreaser to get them clean again. My cpu temps dropped 10c. Time to quit! I think I can try for 4.1 or even 4.2 on air now......

Now I'm getting into dangerous heat levels... I've been running this for a couple of days now... air cooling....
