9800GTX SLI Vs GTX 460 SLI

Guys,

Have a question.

I have a Dual 9800 GTX SLI setup on my main rig.

I have a Dual GTX460 on my second rig.

The thing that surprises me is the Windows Experience Index I see in the two rigs.

Windows Experience Index on GTX460 rig

Windows Experience Index on 9800GTX rig

The GTX 460 system gets a Gaming Graphics rating of 7.3 and the 9800 GTX system gets a 7.5 when I ran the assessment with SLI enabled on both of them.

Is it solely because of the bus width difference? The newer 460 has more shaders, more and faster dedicated frame buffer GDDR5 and supports shader model5 and DX11 and I hoped it would score more.

I intend to play BF3. Which combination would be the best and most importantly Why? I have a 9800 GT on both rigs as a dedicated Physx card.

Thnx,
Regards,
Shiv

WEI is not a reliable indicator of performance. The GTX460 as reviews and benchmarks show is by far a more powerful card than the 9800GTX. The dedicated physX card won't do a thing for BF3 so the best configuration would be the two GTX 460's in SLi.

Yep like Erocker said, the 460's in SLI would easily dust the 9800GTX+'s.

Like BlackOmega said, easily....

And one more thing, don't use the 9800GT @ Physics it will "slow" down the 460īs
I have 2 GTX470 in SLI and I use for testing a 9800GT/Physics in Metro2033, Shift2, Crysis2, BadCompany 2 and the fps drop 10/20%.

I you want to have a dedicated Physics GPU for the 460īs get a GT430 [60USD]

For BF3? Why? Unless you're just talking about overall, but PhysX is definitely dying out.

Iīam pretty sure the result will be the same in BF3, the 9800GT isn't the best choice for Physics using a GTX400/500 Series @ SLI thatīs all.

There is also real benchmarks for testing like 3D mark, GTX460 is better than 9800gtx for sure, even it's better than some gt200 series like gtx260,275,280 (i mean in dx10 run).
I am was run 2Xgtx 460 2g, really i miss them, they was best choice cuz low power use.

Just keep those 460's. They allow me to run Skyrim at ultra settings while giving quite a good experience (didn't measure the fps). The only thing i see is that BF3 will run out of memory if you intend to play at high levels of quality.

See the "tom's hardware"'s BF3 performance analysis for more information.

According to the GPU-Z screenshots you posted, SLI is not enabled for either.

My GTX460 SLI scores 7.9 in WEI, for whatever it is worth.

Now this makes absolutely no sense. A 9800GT is a more powerful card than a GT430, hell my 9600GSO was a lot more powerful than it.
Now if he were to get a 550Ti for PhysX, then he'd be all set. And they can be had cheap enough ~$70-80 used

That's because of Nvidia's sorry ass. Instead of making it so anyone can run it, they made it so you can only use a full Nvidia GPU setup. They're so stupid, the people that would've bought an NVidia card simply for PhysX purposes are not going to now. Idiots.
Not to mention, they took an excellent technology and are trying to bury just like they did with ULi. Bastards.

Guys,

My GTX 460 cards are the 768 MB, 192 bit bus width models and not the usual 1024 MB, 256 bit bus width ones.

That's fine for your 1680x1050 monitor.

I guess the memory bandwidth makes the difference. I re-ran WEI with SLI disabled, and at stock speeds, and I still got 7.9.
