Help remove gunk!

Hi,

I just got a couple of pre owned wii games from gamestop. They all look like they have been on a disc repair machine and there is lots of blue/green/black stuff (probably excess material from disc repair) stuck in the middle of the disc.. you know the part I mean.. if not heres a pic

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I've tried sliding a thin piece of paper inbetween but can only move it about not take it out. How could I do this? anyone got any ideas, its really annoying me and it looks disgusting.

Blast it with air, holding the tin particularly close, or, live with it.

I wash optical discs all the time with lots of running water and some dish washing soap. Make sure to use a clean, soft cloth to dry, or just blow it mostly dry and allow it to air dry the rest of the way. To get at the stuff between the layers, I would try a toothbrush to get it out.

Edit: wash hands before you start the wash process above

This sounds like a typical case of perfectionism and OCD... and I can totally relate! I hope you manage to get your disc clean.

Those layers are so tightly bonded together, that I wouldn't bank on getting it out. Some sort of chemical bath would likely be needed.

Short of that, perhaps soaking in washing up liquid might help? However, be aware that it has the potential to seep into the disc and ruin it.

Also, this is purely a cosmetic problem, so if you can find any way to live with it after trying a couple of suggestions, then you'll feel a lot happier and less stressed.

I can get into the layer on some of the discs and move the stuff about, but not able to get it out. Some are tighter but I could probably seperate them a bit

I know its cosmetic, but it shouldn't be there! I always get annoyed over little things, I wouldn't mind if it was maybe 1-2 discs but its in 9 out of 10 games I just bought.

That gives you hope then. Definitely try soaking in washing up liquid or a mild detergent. It might just help it to go soft and come out.

I'll try that, any other ideas are appreciated too :-)

I was thinking of maybe partially cutting one of the plastic layers off on one of the games to see how it goes or would you think that would cause trouble for the disc while its spinning in the console.

A definitely wouldn't go cutting it up, as it'll likely ruin it. It's grip and balance are likely to go, not to mention that it might just slash and chip off, making the disc useless.

get a twist tie and carefully strip off the plastic. the wire inside is very fine but should be rigid enough to do what you need.

I'm making very good progress. Weapon of choice is the bottom end of a floss toothpick. Its flat strong and flexible. You wouldn't imagine how much better the zelda disc looks now

I fail to see the issue...maybe it looks worse in real life.

Spray paint it black.

Have you tried a small wire brush, (if available) or maybe a fine pick, like a dentists pick? Or maybe the toothpick is working well enough.

I had a Farcry disc that had some damage in the middle of the disc... It's like the disc was 2 layers and one of the layers had chipped away. It was from me putting the CD back in the case, but without pushing the button in the middle; just letting it snap back into place.

You won't have any issue playing the game with the gunk in. IMO you also won't have much of an issue if you break some of the plastic in the middle; I've done some savage damage to the Farcry disc and it was fine.

Either go pikey style and live with the gunk, or go mad and snap plastic getting gunk out Either way, I think the game will still be fine.
