New SSD

Ok so i have this showing up today http://ncix.com/products/?sku=64569&vpn=CSSD-F60GB3A-BK&manufacture=Corsair&promoid=1190 its not my first ssd, but the first one i had would have little pauses when unzipping files. So what i want to know is, is there anything i need to do before during etc when installing win 7 to the ssd?

I've just installed a 120GB version of those in my machine today

Windows 7 is fully aware of SSDs so it will set everything up correctly when installing to an SSD (it disables a bunch of stuff that isn't needed when using SSDs). You don't need to do a thing.

There's a nifty little tool you can run that will also make sure it's configured correctly in Windows called SSD Tweaker, I also disable hibernation and move my pagefile onto my HDD as well as my IE temp folder, though some people say that doesn't matter.
Also make sure you install Windows with AHCI enabled.

Thanks, just hoping it doesnt do that pausing crap when unzipping files lol its not much but iot bugged the hell out of me! lol

That could of possibly been a controller/firmware issue, it shouldn't happen.

i just bought the CorsairForceGt version, for SSD Cashing on my maximusIV Extreme-Z. :toast:

well i have to say these drives are fast. my system boots in 11 seconds which is extreme sauce compared to just using my mechanical drive... :cool:

massive improvement... i recommend these drives to anyone who hasnt yet tried SSD's...

I've also picked up a SSD drive and have a few questions.

1. I've read on other sites that you don't have to install the chipset drivers because of something call TRIM, is this true?
2. Does it have to be connected to the first sata port?
3. Should I do a first time format of the drive?

You should always install chipset drivers regardless of SSD or not.
Connect it to any port you like.
If you are performing a clean install of Windows it will do this for you, just remember to set AHCI in the bios before you install, it makes quite a difference, performance wise.

I spent the evening reading about how to set up a SSD. It seems confusing. A bunch of people say do it one way and other people say do it another way.. :confused:

I've checked and I'm sure the TRIM is working so I guess that's the most important thing.

The way I did mine, and it's working perfectly is just set BIOS to AHCI mode before installing windows. once you do, disable hibernation, Enable TRIM and you are good to go. There are millions of tweaks to do, but not mandatory.

It does not turn off defrag, indexing and superfetch which should all be turned off.

I did change the bios and disabled hibernation. TRIM was already enabled.

Lots o people have said that it (Windows 7) does it for you but you are right it doesn't. How could they at least not have checked?

Erocker, what do you mean by Indexing? Like Windows Search Indexing?

Disable indexing

Description: Indexing creates and maintains a database of file attributes. This can lead to multiple small writes when creating/deleting/modifying files. Searching for files will still work.

Instructions: Start Menu -> Right-Click Computer -> Manage -> Services and Applications -> Services - > Right-Click Windows Search -> Startup type: Disabled -> OK

Description: We also need to stop Windows 7 indexing the SSD. SSD drives seek so fast that Indexing is not needed. In fact, while Windows 7 is indexing the SSD it is slowing down your system.

Instructions: Go to Computer -> Right click on SSD Drive -> Properties -> Uncheck Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties -> Click OK
Once you unchecked indexing follow the onscreen instructions, you may have to skip some files you do not have access to.
