Ive bought 3 ASUS P8P67 rev 3.1 motherboards within this last month and theyve all been great thus far. My vote is for that. Just make sure its the 3.1 revision.

what is the plan? gaming, Ocing, both....do you need 16X16 as in do you plan to run 2 cards. Do you want PCI-e3.0 things like that will help sort out the mix, even if just in the ASUS lineup.

How much of a difference does 16x16 really make over 16x8 or 8x8 anyway?

from what I tested on the P55 setup I run it was like a 3% loss going 8x8 vs the 16x16, plus on my board it made the cards cooler. I meant that most of the 1155 boards will do dual cards but if he needed the lanes for other add in cards it may be a concern if two GPUs are in play ( IE sound card or raid card)

z68 is the chipset. Do you mean motherboard? Go to newegg, adjust by price from highest to lowest, pick the boards at the top.

well patience is something I lack so I ended up ordering the ASRock Z68 EXTREME4 mobo.
You all think its a good one? also grabbed a Corsair H100 cooler so I don't need to mess around looking for a 1155 cooler to work with my current water hardware... *Shakes* Now to learn Intel.... Curse AMD for pushing me away!

Great boards, Had zero issues with mine so far
They also have socket 775 mounting holes, so if you're current block is of a higher quality than the h100 you can probably use that without modding anything |

1156 = 1155 mounting holes, not 775!

I cannot vouch for the Asrock board, but from personal experience I would absolutely recommend the Asus Maximus IV Extreme-Z (which I recently replaced for Maximus IV Gene Z for my HTPC due to size constrains) I've heard good things about Asrocks latest boards, but IMHO, Asus is the best board manufacturer ATM.
About Gen 3, well there's currently no video cards that use the spec, that'll change pretty soon with the release of AMD's 7000 series and Nvidia's Kepler, but to be honest with you, there's no cards that saturate PCI-E 2.0 yet, and I doubt these new cards will even utilize the full bandwidth available to 2.0 spec boards.
