Thanks for all the help on CPU Upgrade, but one last question?
First just wanted to thank y'all for the help on the upgrade. Here's the final decision of what I am going to get (its a combo from Ascentech):
Asus M4A785-M AM3 785G Hybrid Crossfirex CPU: Socket AM3 Support AMD Phenom II/ Athlon II/ Phenom /Athlon /Sempron Processors; Support 45nm CPU and Hyper Transport 3.0 Interface; FSB 5200/2000/1600 MT/s Chipset: AMD 785G & SB710 Memory: 4x 240pin DDR2-1200(OC)/1066/800/667 DIMMs, Dual Channel, ECC/Non-ECC, Un-buffered, Upto 16GB Slots: 1x PCI-Express x16 Slot (Support PCI-Express 2.0); 1x PCI-Express x1 Slots; 2x PCI 2.2 Slots IDE/SATA: 1x ATA-133 Channel; 6x SATA2 Ports, Support RAID 0, 1, 10, JBOD Audio: VIA1708S 8-Channel High Definition Audio CODEC Video: ATI Radeon HD 4200 Graphics Controller, Max Shared Memory 512MB LAN: Realtek 8112L Gigabit Ethernet Controller Ports: 12x USB 2.0 Ports (6 rear, 6 on mid-board); 1x PS/2 Ports; 1x VGA Port; 1x DVI Port; 1x HDMI Port; 1x RJ45 LAN Port; 1x Optical S/PDIF-out Port; Audio I/O Jacks Power Connector: 1x 24pin Main Power; 1x 4pin CPU Power Form Factor: uATX, 9.6 x 9.6 inch / 24.4 x 24.4 cm Product Packaging: OEM / Motherboard & Back-plate (I/O Shield) Amd Athlon Ii X4 645 3.1GHz Quad Core Process Type: AMD Athlon II X4 Quad-Core Processor 645 Frequency: 3.1 GHz System Bus: 4000 MHz Cache L2: 4x 512KB Process: 45nm SOI Socket: Socket AM3 Power Consumption: 95 W Virtualization: Yes (plan on adding the High Speed - Heavy Duty Quiet Run Cooler upgrade) Total with shipping $183 Now here's the question; I have a EVGA Nvidia 8400 GS card. The Motherboard comes with ATI Radeon HD 4200 Graphics Controller, Max Shared Memory 512MB as you can see. I am wondering if I should return the Nvidia card and just stick with the graphics controller that comes on the motherboard? Only major function of my PC will be encoding H264 videos (no online gaming). Will I see better performance with the Nvidia over what comes in it? Thanks |

If you are not gaming, there is no reason to have a dedicated video card. And if you are gaming you'd need something of a much better calibar than the two you've selected. For encoding, the video card will not come into play at all. Encoding replies upon the CPU horsepower. |

For encoding, graphics don't come into play. The add-on graphic card is not useful at all in your case. You will have a perfectly fine experience with the 4200 chip. If you ever need to have gpu power, then it will always be time to upgrade.
