Rumored HD8970 or maybe HD7980?

It seems rumors are really starting to fly off lately in regards to the HD7970. Sapphire's leaked product sheet speaks volumes of it. At the very top of the list it shows a model with a much higher stream processor count (the blacked-out portion) than a normal HD7970. It seems, to Tweaktown, it might be the HD8970 but its much more logical to assume it as the HD7980 (If we follow AMD's naming scheme). With these kinds of rumors its better
to take this with a handful of salt just to be sure. This could be the answer to Kepler (if it arrives on time). Maybe we'll be seeing yet again a remake of the HD4890 vs GTX275 of 2009. Truly great times for those graphically inclined consumers like me.
Be sure to check the link for all the details http://www.tweaktown.com/news/22102/...oon/index.html

I do like the "graphically inclined" title

It does seem like there's a lot of room of improvement here on AMD's part. The chip performs well, that is pretty clear by now. Why not make it bigger, if it's going to stay stable, cool, and efficient enough? Assuming the yields permit it, there's really nothing stopping AMD from doing so.

we don't want a $700 single GPU card now! >_<

this at $549
7970 @$429
7950 @$349

would have been epic. nVidia would have to lower prices by like $200 on the GTX580.

Uhm last year did Nvidia not come out of no where with the gtx580 right on the heals (at least 5 months)after the gtx480 to take the single card crown back...Well it seems that AMD have a wait and see going on here...Wait for the 780 to beat 7970 then WHAM Here comes the 7980 ......

Hmmmm looks like maybe a remake/rehash(or comeback so to speak) of an "X2" product line. Maybe a new naming scheme could be put into effect with those. Like say XD7970 & XD7990 "??"

Maybe it's a 7850x2 as if I recall correctly it has 1152sp's (x2 = 3304).

Probably dual 7850's indeed, and AMD denied having a 2304 one anyway
http://www.guru3d.com/news/amd-denie...adeon-hd-7970/
Quote:
A leaked Sapphire document revealed a Tahiti GPU with 2304 cores. AMD however confirms that there are no hidden cores. The chip has 2048 shaders, so the 2304 number from Sapphire is likely a mistake, or part of a test by AMD to find out which partners leak specifications to members of the press.

This info has been confirmed by Mr. Hook, Senior PR exec from AMD.

that to me makes the most sense considering the 4850x2 was a sapphire exclusive.

to me if you look really close it definitly looks like 2904 on the top one, compare the bottom of the 3's compared to the 9's and see how the bottom of the numbers are curved differently
