chopping a movie together

long story short, i gave a m8 a hdd and some dvds to burn as avi files just because its easier on hdd than dvd, well, he did it alright. but the dozy bastard split the films into 2 halfs in avi format. ive never come across this way before and was jus wondering, what software is there i can use to "glue" the two halfs together?

eh, not too effective, but windows movie maker? but then you have to recode as a wmv, then recode back to avi. major pain.

i use powerdvd to build a playlist and then play it, because it changes between files almost seamlessly.

Movie Maker is all that I could think of. Is it really that hard to recode back to .avi format after?

i use virtualdub (or virtualdubmod) not sure.
Used it for combining movie avi's dwnloaded from internet which were split into 700mb parts.
Just open first , then append and save. Think www.videohelp.com or something like that has info about edditing avi's etc.
