Alienware M18x R2 Reportedly Packing Some Serious GPU Punch

Still not officially announced by Dell, the Alienware-branded M18x R2 gaming laptop is rumored to come with some fresh and powerful graphics options from both NVIDIA and AMD. The Santa Clara team (NVIDIA) is said to be supplying two cards for the M18x R2 - the GeForce GTX 660M and GTX 675M (the latter will be available in a SLI configuration), while the Sunnyvale squad (AMD) will deliver the Radeon HD 7970M, in a CrossFireX setup.

Beside the GPU goodies mentioned, the M18x R2 (18.4-inch) laptop is expected to feature an Intel Ivy Bridge CPU, black and red color choices, an optional Wireless HD card, and more. Stay tuned (and save up?).

to bad 1 of those 7970m's is probably equal to a 7870 Desktop. Laptop naming makes no sense.

I dont know much about the mgpu market but if the 7970m is build on the same 28nm process heat will not be a problem in comparison to the older generations of 6990m and 580m. If anything was gonna melt a systen it would have been the 480m versions lol.

Too bad you have no clue what you are talking about. I used to own an m17r3 which is smaller than the m18r3 and I was able to even overclock the 6970m (40nm as opposed to 28nm) in it to 800 on the core and had to heat issues whatsoever. It was cool to the touch and very quiet.

Whats with all this trolling and blind ignorance to laptop gaming? Sheesh.

My laptop has an i7 thats upgradable to the new ivy bridge mobiles, and a 6990m, and 16gb of ram. Battery life is a joke, but this thing doesn't even heat my room like my desktop did, and I have a 1080 LCD. (And no, I did not pay $3k, it was under $1500.)

I know theres still a lot of people here with much slower desktops. Laptops have come a long ways. And for those of us that can't "be home to play games on a desktop", they are amazing solutions. Even overclockable.

Design was better than expected actually. My flatmate has M14x, you can turn off the tacky light to create a rather nice looking piece of hardware. Cooling system is also more robust than your run of the mill laptop. Keyboard is really comfortable to type on too. My only complaint is that its overpriced by about 30-40%, I would actually consider one if the price is more sensible.

Man, and I just bought the one with xfired 6990's >< a good thing about alienware though, they have great re-sale value even after a year.

-BTW every time alienware is mentioned, there's always the "just get a dang desktop" rant. Some people cant have a bulky desktops. Im in the armed forces and I'm constantly on the move, thus making this laptop a god send. The build quality is great, and the battery life doesnt matter to me, I mean...who is stupid enough to play a game while on battery? M18x is not a laptop is a desktop replacement, heck that's even stated on Dell's site.

Same situation here, my 6990 laptop does wonders. Makes most peoples jaws drop when they see how portable it really is, too.

However, im pretty sure the next line of mobiles is really just the last batch, except rebadged. No major loss for those of us with 580/6990's.

believe it or not, some people like to save on their power bills. 1200w computer with a 100w monitor or a "desktop replacement" laptop that uses about 300w... Yea, they cost a lot more and can't be upgraded usually, but that's why you go for the higher end and get one that'll last at least a couple years. depending on electrical rates, it could pay for itself over time. (especially during the summer rates when they more or less double!)

Then you have people that would like to carry their system with them to LAN parties, or have an on the road/plane type lifestyle (truckers? bands? ect.)

also, just thought i'd remind you... HD is by definition is only 1280x720. (and higher of course). Doesn't really take a whole lot to play at that res.

Or the people that are like "buy a ps3/xbox and play games in hd, too!" make me laugh as I start up skyrim at 1080, ultra settings on my laptop and watch their ps3 stutter at 720 medium.

PC gaming is def better than console IMO, i just can't justify a laptop of this magnitude. I can however see the benefit of desktop replacement for certain people, but the price still doesn't jive with me.

FWIW I can prolly play every game without much trouble on my ol' box and i doubt i pull 1000w. True 1080 gaming is bad@ss

His argument wasn't 1000w, these laptops pull less than 180w.

That's less than most desktop GPU's alone.
