decisions decisions. 7970 or wait for nvidia.

So the 680 is a mid range card? And later this year we will see nvidia's top end card? If so, MSI's R7970 lightning will be well and truely out performed even when overclocked to the max by Nvidia's top card when it comes out. This is how i have understood everything I've read today. But I'm new to all this so maybe I've Misunderstood.

Look at the review for the GTX 680.. Look at the review for the 7970. Look at price. Make your decision. GTX 680 is Nvidia's top end for this series of cards. If you want to wait, I'm sure Nvidia and AMD will have new cards by around the end of the year/beggining of next year.

Drivers may have a role as well. I want to see what this new GTX 680 will do with drivers. I want to give Nvidia a shot this time. I have not had one of their cards since 2005.

Get the 7970.
The number 7970 has one more digit than 680 and that HAS to count for something, no?

Seriously, if you don't want to wait for the next cards, at least wait a little while to see what happens to current card pricing.

I have to buy a card sometime next month. My computer is down right now due to not having a video card. I may just pick up a used GTX 580, lol.

When I'm ready to upgrade my 6970 I'm going to ... uh ... take the other 6970 out of the box.
Actually it's still in the unopened NewEgg box.

No Crossfire? I should't have sold my CF setup before getting a new card.. Lol. I didn't even really think it would take me this long to decide what card I want next.

I'd say go for nvidia, personally, to our OP.

Regardless of what I discussed with you in the other thread, the GTX 680 is still a fantastic card and deserves its 9.5 rating from W1zz. Therefore, I'll watch to see what happens with the GK110 along with GTX 680 pricing. Basically, if the GTX 680 goes down some in price (wishing...) and the GK110 is much further away than August, then I might just get it. Money is for getting into debt for, right?

Note that this here enthusiast hardly ever gets to actually play his games nowadays, so my high end PC is the equivalent of having a Ferrari and only ever driving it sedately down city streets. Won't stop me spending lots of money on it though.

@revengE I was thinking about giving Nvidia a go this time too, thats why i was asking. But I am glad I did ask because it seems I had misunderstood a little bit. So the 680 is the high end card, seems I had been missinformed by a friend. Price isnt going to influence my dicision, my mind is made up. I'm going to get the MSI R7970 lightning on the 30th when it goes on sale at OCUK.com I'm very excited about this card. The next 8 days are gonna drag.

I half want to go to nvidea just for the control panel. Amd's is annoying. I know, it is petty. I have a 6950 now. I do want to upgrade although there is little need. Kinda the Ferrari statement.

I'm definitely gonna get the MSI R7970 lightning because I like what I've read about this card. Even if the Nvidia 680 beats the MSI after I've overclocked it's knackers off, I'll still be happy with my choice.

I'll put off trying Nvidia untill their next series for two reasons. 1, I'm excited about getting a new card asap. 2, It seems people are expecting nvidia's next series to make a bigger splash on the sceen.

Get the GTX680. It performs better and its cheaper and consumes a bit less power.

I would think the Lightning may be able to do it a little quieter. The Sapphire from what I have read is the quietest of the bunch for non-reference coolers.

This is such a tough call but you may have sold it to me Dom (the 680). I wont be able to get water cooling for the lightning for anouther 6 weeks, but by then MSI mite have a 680 lightning out. That is if MSI can do similer things with the 680, what with the power limiter.

I actually went with a GTX 480. It was cheap and its still a beast of a card. So Far it takes everything I throw at it. I will wait for the next series of cards. I would like maybe a GTX 680 Classified. Will wait and see what comes out.

Performance wise good card. In today's bracket, quite power consuming. What was your going price?
