Deepest part of the ocean reached....again and finally

Cheers to James Cameron for this. The ocean needs to be looked at more carefully IMO.

Does anyone remember the Abyss?

Quote:
Hollywood director James Cameron has returned to the surface after plunging nearly 11km (seven miles) down to the deepest place in the ocean, the Mariana Trench in the western Pacific.

He made the solo descent in a submarine called Deepsea Challenger, taking over two hours to reach the bottom.

He spent more than four hours exploring the ocean floor, before a speedy ascent back to the surface.

Nice. Will have to read more about it after work.

And in case anyone interested hasn't heard, Richard Branson is also going down in his sub shortly.

I own the movie, one of the best.

Sad, the press hardly makes mention of the fact that the same thing was done in 1960!

"At more than 10,900 meters (about 35,800 feet), the Mariana Trench is deeper than Mount Everest is tall. It has had only two previous human visitors: U.S. Navy Lt. Don Walsh and the late Swiss explorer Jacques Piccard, who descended to that spot in 1960."

From what I understand, there was about a 40% chance of his vessel developing cracks at the deepest point of the dive. Then on his way up the pressure would relieve those cracks and the vessel could explode. Brave guy, I'm not sure if I would do it!
