Dead HP Pavillion DV6
About a week ago I decided to change the thermal paste in my sister's laptop. It ran fine while she played emulators and watched youtube. However once she went back to her house it started acting up and it BSODed. She said it could then boot her into safe mode. After her rebooting several time ( I have no idea why, she lives a hour from me and I had no way to get to her at that time). Now it displays nothing at all, the fan just turns on and then it shuts off 10 seconds later. The warranty for the laptop is expired and she doesn't really have money to buy a new one so fixing this one would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Did you monitor the Temps before you let her take the laptop back? If not then the seat might not have been good and it started over heating worse than before you changed the paste.

I commonly have to reflow lots of HP's from the Dv series up to the new ones today...
Over the exact same type of issue. Not very good quality from my experience (a few hundred over the last few years) I would say that's a last move option by all means. To avoid an oven I use a 1110F paint stripper.

I re-flowed a dv6 not to long ago again make sure you use a copper shim instead of a thermal-pad or it will happen again http://www.ebay.com/itm/DV6-570379-0...-/250847704316

the chip gets hot the solder softens and then when it cools the chip becomes disconnected the solder on these older boards becomes very soft at about 210-220f and it becomes more prone to failure with age the point of the shim is two fold reduces temps and prevents the chip-package from flexing to much either warping the board or causing the solder to fail |
