Don't know what to do with your computer?
Run demos!
Here are some 64K demos that are of quite high quality. Now for those who do not know what are 64K demos: Basically they are highly compressed and optimized executables that contain a massive library of routines that generate sound, textures, polygons, and hook up to OpenGL or Direct X to enable your computer to generate some quite amazing real time video clip uisng your processor and graphics hardware. Sound is computed on the fly, as well as geometry and math stuff. Everything you see if simultaneously computer and generated frame by fram as well as synced to the music, for an optimum experience. Here are 10 of the best 64K demos that exist. All were downloaded from the POUËT archive. They were created from 2000 to 2006 (so some with less complex elements than others). BTW, give a nice hand to those extremely talented coders!!! Have a nice viewing pleasure! Oh, and they don't require the fastest processor or graphics card. Usually a Direct X 9 card and at least 2 Ghz (or even less) CPU will do. PS: Feel free to drop in your impressions upon your viewings!

very clever stuff and amazing what u can do with 64k..
when i first played with demoes a few years back my machine was never up to it.. now i always kinda feel the demoe isnt up to my machine and they leave me a little disapointed.. just me getting jaded i spose.. it alway surprized me the demoe scene wasnt/isnt more popular.. but i spose somebody has the produce the things.. its a bit quicker to download and pass judgement than it is to make em.. it reminds me of the day i used to download tons of midi files then spend hours going thru em looking for the best ones.. thanks for posting em.. time i looked for a few more.. trog ps.. deadringer gets my vote out of that lot.. |

Batch #2
Here's some more!
Some require decent specced machines (2+ ghz AMD or 3+ ghz PENTIUM, X800 gpu or 7600GT), other run fine on TI4200 / RADEON 8500 and P3 or AMD K7. Anyway, that makes for another 10 demos of 64K, enough to treat your eyes and ears and also discover some extra talents.

Simply amazing. I had no idea you could do that with just 64kb of code.

There was a huge swastika thing in a promo pamphlet of the XBOX360, no one ever bothered. I even posted it on Inquirer (theinq). I don't even think the author knows anything about swastikas since he's Asian.

I want to know if anyone else is having this slideshow speed on the demo rgba_paradise_final.exe ??? It's where there are trees and northern mountains. From there, I get an really slow performance (slideshow speed). My specs are in my sig. I'm thinking it myight be my graphics card.

chaos theory's sound track alone was intense. what i find truly amazing is how long the clip produced actually is
if they could make a way to make this interactive, games engines would no longer need GBs of space |

- Texture generating engine - Sound sample generating engine - 3D polygon generating engine - Direct X hookups - Camera Travel path generating / optimizing engine (spline) - Sound synthesizers and effects modules (like you would find in VSTs) - Voice synthesizers / phonemes engine - True text hookups to Windows font system - Various math functions of all sorts - blablabla.... All these optimizations are then linked up from a frame by frame system that calls various graphics effects and sync the music by frame number to produce something that ressembles a video clip, which plays exactly the same every time you run it. Even the Random routines aren't actually random, as they usually originate from a defined seed value. Anyway, what I mean by all this is that it uses a hell of a lot of memory(textures and samples alone, add the frame buffer). If you would like to create your own demo, I would suggest you to grab as much pre coded stuff as you can, to save some time . This is extremely hard work!

Impressive stuff, considering I would have expected a few screenshots of these to take up more than 64k.

You want to make your own "Chaos Theory"?
Conspiracy has released their A.D.D.I.C.T. 2 tool to the public. Now you can make your own demos and not insert a line of code, just click your way through the tool. Anyway, you'll probably still need a 3D modeler and some music making tool. Not to mention that you probably won't be able to make your demos 64K, but more like 8 - 10 MB.
Good luck! EDIT: A TUTORIAL is available.
