230mm case fan RPM
Hey guys I just put together my HAF 932. It comes with 3 - 230mm fans (2 intake and 1 exhaust) and 1 - 140 mm exhaust fan. The 230mm is suppose to run at 700 rpm. The front intake is 725 rpm, the top exhaust is 730 rpm and the side panel 230mm is 480 rpm. I have this fan directly to the motherboard, I've also ran a molex connector to the PSU and still remains at 480 rpm. Defective fan? Should I worry at all about this or just leave it be? At 700 rpm they push 110 cfm, would the side panel blowing on the GPU / CPU be sufficient at 480 rpm? Thanks for your help.

If you look at the fans, they should have a sticker on them with a model number. With that, you can look up the specifications.
I have a 230mm fan that runs at 800 RPM +/- 20%. |

Did some poking around and put the side fan into another fan slot, ran at proper 770ish rpm. Must be defective fan port on the motherboard. Routed a molex to PSU and although i can't monitor the speeds through the PSU, I'd say it looks to be running faster and distributing more air. Thanks for the reply.
PS. do you know how to monitor the rpm of a fan through the PSU? I'd like to be able to confirm its running properly but i dont know how to when its not on the motherboard... |

Pull out the tach lead (yellow wire) and pop it into another connector. Plug that into the motherboard.

Well here's the thing. I took the side panel fan that was running at 480 rpm. It was plugged into PWR_FAN 2 slot, I unplugged it and put it into PWR_FAN 1 and it registered at 770 rpm. So I'm lead to believe that the fan is perfectly fine, but PWR_FAN 2 might be a little defective. Not a huge deal, I router a molex connector and put the side panel fan into that. I would like to confirm that this fan (now plugged into the PSU) is properly running again at that 770 rpm.
Does the fan run at max RPM when plugged directly into the PSU? Should I just assume that it is indeed running at 770 rpm? Thanks.

Yes, just assume it's running as it should. A fan plugged into the PSU directly will run at full speed.
What motherboard do you have? I've never seen a motherboard with two PWR_FAN headers. I'm betting that PWR_FAN2 is actually a chassis fan header (mislabeled on the board or the manual) and you have it set lower than 100% in the BIOS. |

ITs because that header is set to a specific speed. Your best option here is to order some fan header to molex adapters and run them straight from the PSU to get max RPM.

I have an ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3. And you are correct, I have PWR_FAN 1 which works fine, but the one that isn't running full speed is CHA_FAN 2. And I have routed a molex connector to the PSU so the fan should be running at full speed. It sure looks a bit faster and I can feel more air being pushed off of it. Thanks for all the help guys, problem looks solved
