Introducing the Leap, a potential successor to the mouse

Introducing the Leap

Leap represents an entirely new way to interact with your computers. It's more accurate than a mouse, as reliable as a keyboard and more sensitive than a touchscreen. For the first time, you can control a computer in three dimensions with your natural hand and finger movements.

I think its very cool, this might just be the successor to the mouse. I dunno, but it may happen someday.

think about the possibilities, combine this with kinect and advanced AI.

Yay Skydrift was used in that vid!

Now this I could see myself buying vs Kinect. Just because I don't have to get up to control it.

Yes, when I get into a fight with my girlfriend

On a serious note, the point you made makes sense, it seems something that could exhaust on the long run.

i don't see this as a full replacement to mouse/keyboard just because they've become so contemporary, but seeing the HL2:Lost Coast demo, i can definitely see myself fragging it up while pointing an invisible gun at the monitor
Also, this could bring us much closer to tabletop computing. Microsoft tried it with the Surface, but it never really became much more than a novelty at trade shows and a few NY coffee shops...

Great tool. Just dont pick your nose or drink or scratch your head etc. The mouse is good for long term use... you rest your arm on the table. Just like the flat apple keyboards. Rest your arm and wrist on the table. Can you imagine typing holding both hands up in the air? Fun but tiring.

I would certainly like one of those devices if it was FLAT. On the desk. Worked as a touch pad, but also in 3D when you lifted your hand - but was limited to local proximity.

is that a bad thing?

also, do artists have massive shoulders?
when painting or drawing correctly, the hand pretty much hangs without support all the time. (The arm movements artist make while drawing or painting are not far from what the video shows. And the process of drawing/painting can easily go for hours. I suppose I don't really need to explain any further as my point should be pretty obvious at this point...)
P.S. that makes me bring this up again:

Judging by the video, the guy mainly only uses his left hand... My right arm is already bigger from having done something in my teen-age years so maybe its a good way to re-adjust my left arm's size. Nice gadget btw.

P.S. that makes me bring this up again:
This will never replace a tablet for art. No pressure felt. 50% of technique is proper pressure. This lil' gadget has NONE. Looks cool but not practical for anything other then a TV remote replacement and presentations.

I can see using this together with a mouse/keyboard on a daily basis. Moving around stuff, switching focus, zooming, certain shortcuts etc.

From what I've learned on input from my own experience so far, ANYTHING can be emulated and the human brain can adapt to the craziest input methods. So I don't see any problem here.

I agree.

As far as waving your arms around for hours, I do it often while painting/drawing on an easel.

Oh yeah I know but the amount of energy you spend painting is negotiated with the resistance of the canvas. With this gadget it will take a lot more energy to maintain brush control.
