AMD AIB Partners Said to be Working on "HD 7970 X2"

Although AMD has plans to unveil its dual-GPU Radeon HD 7990 some time during Computex 2012, next month, it is reported that its add-in board (AIB) partners will be rolling out custom-design dual-GPU graphics cards labelled "Radeon HD 7970 X2." These cards most likely feature a pair of 28 nm "Tahiti" GPUs with high GPU clock speeds (perhaps above those of the HD 7990, perhaps even over 1 GHz). The new cards could then target the performance levels of NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 690 at competitive prices. It could also be AMD's strategy to give the onus to AIB partners to come up with "off-spec" dual-GPU cards to compete with GTX 690 in terms of performance, while maintaining an "on-spec" Radeon HD 7990 that seeks a higher price-performance ratio than that of the GTX 690.

Oh yeah, this is what I am waiting for, I hope that they will use a very beefy VRM section so that it will be easy to get atleast 1200 per core.

im hoping for some type of power management like zero-core+adaptive v-sync to keep the power draw down until it's needed.....

and if possible id like a switch to turn it off as well!!!

I liek 7970 x2, as that leaves room for 7980, or 7990 to be single-GPU cards, like X1950XTX, HD4890, etc....I'd really love to see a 1250 or 1300 MHz 7970 called the 7980!!!

I'm a bit skeptical this is real. That picture is a 6990. Original image can be found here.
How do we know the 7990 isn't just a codename for 7970X2 or vice-versa?

I really hope this card is up to par. We need some good competition around here.

Maybe they'll have good drivers for cross-fire at the cards release. I gave up on my tri-fire setup because I got tired of waiting for good crossfire drivers.

There was a rumour about a beefed up version of Tahiti which as far as I know it could be true.

Could be that AMD/ATI delivered Tahiti with less clusters than it really has? Be it low yields or a way to "chum the waters" for an Nvidia answer?

Does that means that the x2 will be using two boards in one slot as oppose to a single board with two GPU's on it , like any xx90 cards?
If so would that be using more power (watts)?

I am there with you on this...
They should never have drop the x2 as it was clear that it was a dual GPU's (to some people anyways)

I would love to see AMD come up with an 7980 after the x2 but i am pretty sure that is not in the work but who knows someday AMD might surprise us?

Cool things like that just dont happen.Even as much as we (the consumer) would LOVE to be knocked off our feet by some surprise, hidden away GPU architecture. Unfortunately is just doesnt happen. We will get a 7990 dual gpu that is 5-7% slower than a 690 and 60-$85 cheaper and live with it.

Hope im wrong

Oh thank you, Capt. Obvious!!! What would we have ever done without you! Of course we should have realized since it doesn't have the same die packaging as the other 7000 series.
