7950 or 670 to upgrade 6950 2GB? Should I?

Hey guys,

I apologize if there have been threads before this one about this subject, but I have been seriously considering a new card if I can sell my old one. I've heard different pros and cons about each, but I want to know if anything has really changed in the last month or two.

What I'm looking for/asking:
-A card around $400 (so cheap 7950 or GTX 670). I'd probably pay a bit more for a full size 670 if I were going that route. Is it even worth upgrading? I do get pretty good framerates generally but it does alternate between decent and "stuttery" in many cases.
-Must drive a 1080p 120Hz DL-DVI monitor at 120Hz without any 3D technology enabled, and support 120Hz in all 2D/3D games or tasks. Heard some complaints about the newer cards not being able to do this well or with VSYNC enabled?
-Will be replacing a Sapphire 100312-3SR HD 6950 2GB that has a factory unlocked second BIOS to 6970 @ 800/1250, and will be going in the i7 machine in my system specs. I'd hope to have a noticeable performance boost and equal/lower power consumption if applicable. Would like to OC a bit as well, possibly. I haven't had any real problems with my 6950 driver-wise, and would prefer to not have a card that crashes my system or craps out consistently.

Those are my main concerns. My other concern is what I can probably get for my 6950 2GB factory unlocked on somewhere such as these forums. I still have the box and probably all the accessories as well excluding the Dirt3 coupon (some accessories are unopened). Card has been kept pretty clean, fans are in great shape and there are no VRM burns. Spent much of its time at 840/1325 (CCC limits, stock voltage).

Thanks for any input and help you guys can offer me.

IMO, its wont be that awesome if you take the 7950.

670 would be good.

but i think you can skip this year and get a new card next year?

670 without a doubt, unless you want to wait about 5 months for amd 8 series and see what they bring to the table this next time round... but I doubt they'll bring anything IMO

Alright, so we have 2/2 votes for the 670 so far. What are used 6950 2GB unlocked cards usually going for these days? And, does this 670 look decent or should I wait a bit for the Windforce or DCUII? EVGA 02G-P4-2678-KR GeForce GTX 670 FTW 2GB 256-bi...

I've seen them sell on forums between $175 (low end) to probably averaging $190 (I've seen 6970s go for $200). lol, for my unlocked 6950s w/ waterblocks and stock coolers, I only got $484 shipped back in January

Why?

Yes, you might see slightly improved performance. Yes, there might be slightly less power draw. The problem is that the answer is slightly in both cases.

You might be able to sell a 6950 for $175. The new ones are going for a little over $200 currently. If you spent $150 on another 6950, and crossfired it, you'd be better than either a 670 or a 7950. The power draw increases, but you can save $200, and get a newer card either when prices drop to reasonable or the next generation hits. As it stands, there is very little reason to blow that kind of money, given that this is only one generation's improvement.

W1z and his Perfect 10 would vote for the Asus card.

I don't think it would be worth it if you're coming from an unlocked 6950 2GB. If you had a 1GB model and were you going for the power savings I could see some merit into spending another $200 for a new card (taking into account that an unlocked 6950 goes for ~$170-200 used ) but in your case? Not so much.

I wouldn't bother with it but if you must I would tell you to consider the 7870 instead: it would cost you less and you'd get 95% of the 7950 performance.

I've seen auctions end at $132 as I've been trying to get a used one for $130. I'm in no rush to get it since my 6850 plays whatever I throw at it (heck, just one month ago I was using an HD3850 AGP) but now that everyone seems to be selling them I thought I'd take a shot and try to get one for cheap. It uses 20w more on average than my 6850 but has 1.5x the power plus the 2GB would be nice.

I'd honestly try hold out till the next series from AMD or Nvidia.

If you really have the urge to buy a new GPU then definitely go for the GTX670, the OC'd models or personally OC'd GTX670's beat stock GTX680's and blow the HD7950 out of the water in most titles.

But once again, the performance gains from your HD6950 wont be huge. Gonna be nothing like going from my GTX275 to a GTX670 which I plan to buy in the next few weeks once Australia can finally get there hands on some Asus GTX670 Direct CUII Top cards :P

Yer u gotta go the 670 on stock performance. I think youll probably get a reasonable upgrade 2. One 670 is similar to two 6950s so u should go close to doubling your frames. Im itching to get one meself!
