LG Display Develops World's First 5" Full HD LCD Panel

LG Display, a leading manufacturer of thin-film transistor liquid crystal display, introduced today a 5" Full HD LCD panel for smartphones – the highest resolution mobile panel to date. Allowing smartphone users to view Full HD content in the same quality as on TVs and monitors, LG Display and its new panel significantly advances the cloud computing experience widely considered the next major internet trend.

LG Display's 5" Full HD LCD panel is a step forward past existing mobile display technology. The LCD panel based on AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology features 440ppi and 1920x1080 resolution, providing for the first time Full HDTV quality on a smartphone. With 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, the panel is also 0.5 inches larger, 2.2 times denser in pixels, and 1.3 times more advanced in ppi than the preceding 4.5" panel at 329ppi and 1280x720.

"As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5" Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market," said Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. "With the world's highest resolution smartphone display, LG Display continues to remain a step ahead in developing the most innovative in display technology products."

The display solution of choice for smart devices, LG Display's AH-IPS is the technology behind the new Full HD LCD display. With the high density of AH-IPS, the naked eye is unable to distinguish between individual pixels. AH-IPS panels also express the original color of images highly precisely, and feature a wide viewing angle as well as stable display image and rapid response speed when touched. Finally, with its brighter light transmission and lower power consumption, AH-IPS is ideal for use in outdoor settings.

The 5" Full HD LCD panel from LG Display is expected to be released during the second half of this year, and will be on exhibit for the first time at SID 2012 Display Week in Boston starting June 4.

Awesome.
Nothing like a 5" cellphone display to remind you once again how outdated the resolution offered by 40"+ TV sold everywhere is.

Holy shit that screen is so neat and of such high quality. Shame LG's software support on all their products didn't let them down.

poor apple, they're falling behind in tech again.

phones that can run at this res wont be far off, they'll just put in hardware acceleration to help it along (better GPU, basically)

I wonder if it is going to hit the market before or after Windows 8 comes out. Windows Phone 7 can't support it (max 480x800), no iPhone can support it (it would have to be a new model) so the only phones that can support it now are Android.

Well, Toshiba has a 500PPI screen also, and it was release more than 6 months ago:

Well at 5" is no longer a cellphone, is a smart ping-pong racket.

my htc trophy has a pixel density of 246ppi and honestly it only needs to be improved slightly from here. I can already barely see the pixels, so this is cool and all but i really just see this making the phones laggy. especially if it is used in the already laggy android os (which it probably will be). just my opinion though.

Because most monitors that are sold cost less than $200 and until they get under that price point, there is very, very, very tiny market for them (namely, radiology).

There's already 6-10 mega pixel screens available (1080p is 2mp) and have been for quite some time.

Probably never will. The standard is shit. It has no technical requirements establishing signal loss, signal isolation, nor crosstalk. It was doomed from day one but just like ye ol' coaxial connection, the rapid proliferation of the connection will prevent a better standard from taking hold.

DisplayPort isn't much better.

Because you cant play shit on that resolution?? How many entry cards actually support 4K resolution hmm?? Have you ever wonder how is to play BF3 or Crysis on a 4K resolution with full details??

And besides, you are not staying ~30 cm from your screen like you do with phone, don't you now?? So why do you need a 4K display anyways?? BTW, Windows and java/flash/active X craps will scale like hell anyways...etc, etc, etc
