I use a set of floor standing speakers and an old Hifi amp from the 70s : ]

I use audiophile headphones because they sound amazing. See system specs for my audio. Tried 7.1 surround headsets, and they were just junk compared to audiophile Audio Technica/Sennheiser headphones.

Always desktop, never headphones; if the missus walks in the room to tell me that dinner's ready and I'm gaming with headphones I could have a heart attack.

I use both

Most of the time I use 2 bookshelf speakers and a powered subwoofer for the added impact arcade experience and at night I always use my Sennheiser HD 595s for the immersive ultra loud late night gaming experience. Lately I've moved away from using the full 5.1 home theater setup. I prefer the actual speakers and sub because deep bass is hard to get in headphones while maintaining clarity.

My audiophile headphones sound better than any desktop speakers, and they are open-air so people can still hear what your hearing and you can hear your wife walking in just fine.

In the past I rarely used headsets but recently found a pair that are easy on the ears. Now it's about 60/40 speakers/headset.

- MMO Raids

- Stealthy FPS or any other game were hearing nuance sounds matter.

- At night when you don't want your kids waking up to the death throes of your victims.

I prefer the headset for better accuracy of my surroundings in certain games which need it.

I use basic Sennheiser HD202s plugged into a Sony amp which is connected to my Infrasonic Quartet Pro Audio sound card.

Headset: All of the minute sounds I can hear would get lost with speakers. Plus, I hate having people such as my parents eavesdrop on me and listening to who I'm talking with or what I'm listening to.

Cheap Creative Fatal1ty headset on onboard Realtek chipset. I'm a pseudo-audiophile I guess, as I can really notice quality differences but a "decent" pair of headphones, onboard sound and a decent audio source are sufficient for my needs.

Xonar D1 analog out to a Denon amp and two Sony bookshelf speakers. Still an old stereo guy myself. For music also use Sennheiser HD518 open cans. Desktop is mostly garbage and I hate subwoofers.

I'm with phusius. A proper headphone setup can shake your gibbletts as well as a speakers can, plus its hard to beat the accuracy of headphones without very expensive speakers/amp. Most of my gaming is at night though and I don't want to disturb those around me. All th headsets with integrated mics sound like garbage to me, though I may just be biased. I've said it before and ill say it again, now that I have a proper audio setup, ill never go back to onboard/headset/poopy sounding things. Ill sacrifice graphics cards before I give up my audio.

Headset.
Mainly because I don't like to be disturbed by other noises and don't want be rude to others by forcing them to listen to what I'm listening.
Also, I usually chat while gaming.
But I used to resort to speakers only.
