Query max resolution of graphics card?
I have a PC with on-board video running win 7. I want to get a higher resolution monitor, but first I need to know the highest resolution the graphics chip supports.
Is there a way to determine the maximum resolution programmatically? Looking up the spec is an error prone procedure, so I prefer a direct, foolproof method. I tried GPU-Z which supposedly shows everything about the graphics card. But it does not show this piece of info. |

What gpu do you have?
Amd or Nvidea's product page usually says also. |

Right click your Computer icon and select Manage. Select Device Manager and tick the Display adapters. It should tell you there. If it's modern onboard video it can handle higher resolution.

Fill out your system specs.
If you connect via VGA, the maximum is usually 1600x1200 (it can go higher but watch out). If you connect via DVI or HDMI (safely), the maximum is 2560x1600. If you connect via DisplayPort, the maximum is 3840x2160.

Normally, if you have integrated graphics you will find either in the Control panel or in the taskbar an icon/link to the display adapters properties, you will see a tab for resolution and the drop down will list all supported resolutions for you chosen connection (Dsub, HDMI, DVI etc).
