Can a damage HDD reduce your fps?

I think my hard drive is the cause of the low performance I get in some games like Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction, Crysis 1 and maybe.. Battlefield 3.

The HDD is already desfragmented.

According to a program called CrystalDiskInfo, the status of my hard drive is "caution".

This is what Acronis-Drive-Monitor says about my HDD:

This is my seagate 375 gb (400): Refurbished: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3400832AS ...

My seagate makes the same noise of a damaged seagate HDD shown in this video in the
minute 1:47, my HDD doesn't make any click noise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-BXP...layer_embedded

My pc:
Q83002.5 ghz Core 2 Quad
MSI GTX 550 OC edition you
4 gb ram ddr2 800
ecs g31tm7
PSU: OCZ Fatal1ty 550 W
1280x1024 maximum resolution

On Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction maxed out, when Im in an enclosed area or just looking at a small space, the usage of my my card (according to MSI Afterbunner) is between 75-87% and I get between 38 fps and 45 but when I'm in an open area the use of my card drop to 43-54%, my fps drops to 16-23. When Im in a opened area and the game is maxed out my fps are between 16-19 and when set the settigns to the lowest, I get 4 more fps... Eventhough this game just use 2 cores, is imposible that with my pc I get such a poor performance. I have a similar issue with crysis 1 in certain missions but the fps are a lot better than in splinter cell.

In Battlefield 3 at 1280x1024 on high on team deathmatch, there are times when I get 38-41 average fps (the usage of the vcard is 92-98%) and suddenly my fps drops to 25-29 (the usage of the vcard drops to 67% ).

These are my options, if I should replace my HDD:

WD:

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 ...

Seagate:

Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB C...

Which one is better?, The difference in storage capacity does not matter at all to me, 500 gb is enough, the WD costs $ 92 dollars while the seagate costs 120 in my country .

Yes a bad drive can effect FPS. Run the Seagate tool on your HD. Running third party software doesnt mean the drive is bad. If the Seagate tool reports an error after the long test RMA the drive. If it doesnt chances are the drive is fine and you have other issues.

I would go with the WD Blue drive... it has a longer warranty (3 yrs) than that Seagate (1 yr). If you want a 5 yr warranty, look for a similar priced WD Black drive

I only buy WD Blue drives and have had good luck with them so far. Others may have a different opinion of them...

Ok, I will run the seagate tool, about the RMA... is just not valid in my case because I have 2 years with the drive and Im not even the original owner.

In my country, I would just have 6 months of warranty regardless of what drive I choose, and the HDDs I posted are the better options... yeah I know, that sucks.

+1 on the WD Blacks. I had always been a Seagate man until I built this rig and caught the Blacks on sale. Great drives!

Unlikely. It wouldn't really lower your FPS but instead make things choppy as data can't be loaded fast enough. Once everything is loaded performance should be fine.

broken hdd will likely result in choppy gameplay, not a smooth reduction in fps.
loading screens might take longer, and since they are static you might not see the choppiness.

for me: reallocated sector count > 10 = RMA

yours is at 10, i'd observe it a bit longer, if it goes up RMA the drive, or at least make a backup very soon

The Hitachi Deskstar 7K3000 2TB HDD is a very good one and very fast. It's also slowly coming back down toward the $120 price it was at before the flood. I had a chance to get one for $100 on a Newegg email promo just before the flood and I'm still kicking myself for not jumping on it.

TPU'ers, what are you doing? Why don't help him troubleshooting this and verify the cause of the issue instead of recommending new drives instantly? Oh and please do not condemn a brand on warranty periods because those are internationally different (e.g. SG gives a 3 year warranty in all, if not most European countries).

Thank you.

I don't know what your ambient temperatures are, but one of your problems may be heat.
If other components are getting near the max temps, they may be throttling back.
More than likely, 61C did not help matters with that drive, at all. (it was running at 41C when you took the screen shot of Crystal Disk Info; however, it has hit that 61C at some point or points)

Quote from Seagates support FAQ:

Quote:
All Maxtor ATA, SATA, and SCSI drives can operate with or without a fan, providing the hard disk temperature does not exceed 131°F (55°C) as measured from the top cover of the drive. Reliability will be compromised when the drive is exposed to temperatures above 55°C or 131°F. When in doubt of your system's ventilation capabilities, or ambient environment of your hard disk, add an extra cooling fan to the drive bay or system case to force air across the drive.
Just my lowly opinion.
Hope you get it solved.

I thought my HDD was the culprit in the poor performance I get on Splinter Cell: Conviction, but I was wrong, the culprit is my cpu because this game doesn't work well with quad cores with low clock speed like mine, this game is more cpu dependent, now I dont think my HDD is very damaged:

Ive never seen my HDDs temperature higher than 44 even after playing BF3 for hours.

My Cpu hottest core reaches 75c on full load and my gpu max tempeture is 59c.

I would re-think that... the test shows your drive failed, it has bad sectors.
It recommended you run Seatools for DOS to try and repair them.

Hey, OK, I am just going by the screen shot you posted.
You might wanna look at it yourself, again, it shows it hit a max of 61C.

Whatever you believe, it is your system.
Good luck to you.

I wouldn't worry about the reallocated sector count quite yet. If you run a smart test are you getting any errors on any of the LBA sectors? If the test is completing without erroring out, I doubt it is about to die as TheMailMan suggests. I think you need to test it more, an Ubuntu LiveCD and using smartctl should give you a little more detailed output. If it survives a long smart test, I'm sure it will be fine for a little while longer. I would keep an eye on it and make sure you have a backup.

It's nothing to do with the sector count man, it's temperature That temperature is nothing to be sniffed it. Backup all info and RMA the drive. While in warranty, you shouldn't have to deal with 61 degree temps, simple.

No-one should suggest that you continue to run this drive.
