Windows 8 Out for Consumers in October, Enterprises and Partners in August

Microsoft's next big client operating system, Windows 8, will be out by October 2012. The operating system will be first made available to enterprise customers and hardware partners as early as by August, while the general public will have access to it in October. Along with availability to enterprises, Microsoft will commence the Windows 8 Commerce platform, which means developers of apps for the Metro UI can start monetizing their works.

Windows 8 will get its big sales push at this year's Christmas sales season, when the software will be sold through major sales channels, such as retail, OEM (pre-installed) and special (student, university, government). For those who didn't quite get blown away by Windows 8 (through its Consumer Preview), Windows 7 will be supported looking deep into this decade. The operating system has currently passed the 640 million mark for the number of licenses sold, making it the best selling OS in computing history.

Unless Windows 8 comes with noticeable improvements in gaming, I'm gonna stay with 7.

Would need something really special besides a new UI to get my interest.

Otherwise, it will be just a repeat of the whole windows Vista eXPerience (XP -[Vista]-> 7 -[8 aka Metro]-> the next big thing).

Not gonna happen. Microsoft's moving away from service packs.

Fuck no. The only reason I switched to 7 was due to file transfer improvements (I transfer a lot of large files, which would often cause explorer.exe to lock up on Vista) and the fact Microsoft ended mainstream support for Vista. I used Win8 for five minutes and hated it. No standard desktop with start menu? No deal.

Relax there will be a registry switch or something, and if not the win keyboard key will have to be popped out and restrain from pressing the start button. optimizations should be worth it.

The only thing really holding this OS back is that touch screen monitors are not the norm.. But they are dropping in price... and I can't wait to buy one once I can get a 22" or bigger under $200. Windows 8 with out a touch screen is like an ipad OS on a mac with out touch screen.. Everybody is hating windows 8, but I think it's a great move for us all... Who else better to get us affordable touch screen monitors than Microsoft?

EDIT: This maybe Microsoft's new mouse wheel! hehehe

Hey, ME gets a bad rap, just like Vista. I had less problems with it than I did with 95 or 98.

True... that ME and Vista worked for you. Their rap is however justified as far as I'm concerned. Spent 9 months at a job with Vista on my workstation and came home to 7 every night. I never hated a job until that one.

Vista was actually not that bad after a while. ME was always crap. And why Vista didn't work for you can be debated endlessly, but you know as well as I do that a LOT of the bad rep came from underpowered computers with tons of bloatware and bad drivers. Not to mention that a lot of people bought a computer with Vista and then immediately formated the computer and installed their virusridden Windows XP SP1 they got from piratebay because that was what you were supposed to do and had no antivirus software because they "blocked their games" and made the computer NOT WORKING and I just had flashbacks from tech support. -_-

(however, the most stable PC I've seen in my life was my brothers Toshiba laptop with Windows ME, it worked without a flaw for nearly a decade, the first six years or so it was the main computer in the house. It was scary.)
