I think these new MSi 7950s are on 7970 boards but with an extra section on the VRM

Partially true; finally got the pix to come through of my card. This arrived in my hands about 2 weeks ago, ordered from NCiX.ca

Seems like reference but with an extra section on the VRM? Anyone can shed some light on the technicalities of this particular card?

Looks the same as my 7970 as far as the layout goes. It definitely has the whole VRM section.

Haven't tried but i highly doubt it, i think i was lucky enough already! lol

Haven't even put juice to this card yet as i'm waiting on a few parts to finish up a build. I'm too lazy to rip apart my audio rack & HTPC and swap out cards just for some testing Sorry.

From what i have seen layout is same but there is 1 extra section in the VRM. I have yet to see a pik of a 7970 (reference OR GHz) with 7 stages; i'm guessing 5 + 1 + 1. Everything i have seen is 6 stages; 5 + 1 or 4 + 1 + 1.

Can you get a pik or a link to your card?

I REALLY REALLY think MSi hit a homerun with this card

my gpu-z shows 1792 shaders. no idea about the flashing thing, prob not going to risk it anyway, idles at 30 celsius and stays super cold even at 1100/1575 OC.

Yep, that Sapphire is the same as this MSi. If you look at more reviews you will see that a lot of the cards seem to be missing this "extra" VRM, mayhaps i have been looking at older "rev 1" stuff? Mayhaps ALL new shipping 79xx have this beefed up VRM? Still leaves me wondering why the GHz edition is lacking? That is the VRM section right? lol

Do you not have a BIOS switch on your card? Something to keep in mind if you ever feel adventurous or need mo4r p0wah!! Glad you are happy! Hopefully mine works out as well as yours

Yes. That pik is straight from W1zzs GHz review. TBH all the 7950/70 reviews i have looked at here (TPU) are missing that 1 VRM You can clearly see it is a 5 + 1 design.

This MSi & your Sapphire have a 5 + 1 + 1 it appears All the reviews i have come across have the same images as W1zzs, you are the first person i have seen with same VRM section as i have

Here is another forum member with similar card to yours, 7950 instead of a 7970. He is "missing" a VRM section...

http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/sh...92&postcount=1

Some1 correct me if i am wrong please

Well I could see a 7950 not having the full 7 stage VRM. But seeing that 7970 GHz missing one is just shocking.

I know, it's strange. VERY STRANGE. Your Sapphire is the ONLY other card, reference board style/layout, i have seen with the 5 + 1 + 1 VRM section. Out of curiosity how does it clock? Quite good i'd imagine?

Everything else, from everyone else, i have seen uses the 5 + 1 VRM. Of course once you start looking at lightning edition/etc cards and what not this all goes out the window as they are running totally different boards/layouts already but for anyone looking for a reference style board/layout for like watercooling or similar i think this 7950 can't be beat

ESPECIALLY @ the price point

I'm going a lil' bonkerz waiting for the rest of my stuff to put this all together

Oh look.... Almost 4:20....

4:20 (fellow Canadian )

Yeah it overclocks quite well, tho TBH I haven't even tested it's limits. I just popped it up to 1100/1500 in Overdrive and left it. I mean it was 1000/1450 with just a flip of the BIOS.

That MSI looks to be a gem. I don't have alot of love for MSI but in this case it looks to be a steal.

hehehe Thats pretty nice clocks for just "setting & forgetting!" lol This card has a BIOS switch as well but i think it's just a backup in case, there is no performance difference between the 2 i think. Yup looks like MSi is treating the customers this time 'round

You should try playing around with yours some more

I don't really feel the need to push it any further. It chews up everything I have thrown at it. I can save whatever "extra" that's left in it for when something slows it down.

Agreed, maybe next year when games are demanding a little more (I hope) I will mess around with mine as well, I only use OC settings 1100/1575 when playing a really demanding game like Shogun 2 with massive armies on the field, etc.

309.99 free ship no tax, I can't complain, this card is a beauty all around.

Basically. I got my 7950 for $88. Sold my 3 free games for $20 on Ebay, $20 mail in rebate, and sold my 6970 on Ebay last night for $201.99.

Not bad at all. OC'ing it to 1125/1575 virtually makes it faster than stock 680 imo... so yeah... helluva deal. Newegg has it back in stock btw.
