Is Monitor Response Time/Ghosting Even an Issue in 2012?

Tell him your concerns about gaming and see what he recommends between the two you're considering.

Despite all LCDs suffering from ghosting as I explained above, I've found that my Iiyama (see specs) is very playable on fast FPS games and it's not as noticeable as you'd think. This model is no longer made unfortunately, but other models should be similar. I've also got an LG 120Hz monitor that's inherently better with ghosting, especially when driven at 120Hz. LG are not especially expensive either, so I'd recommend looking at this brand too.

see, well that is a TN display, i know TN doesn't give visible ghosting it's the slightly more dangerous AMVA panel im looking at. If it's not good enough i will definately grab an Asus TN panel without thought

If you pan with it, then the ghosting/smearing effect is pretty bad, like on any LCD monitor. However, when playing an FPS, there's a lot of forward movement. As your effectively "zooming in", the sideways movement is a lot slower and thus makes it less noticeable. Of course, when spinning round it's a different story. However, since this monitor's response time is quite quick, it's simply not as obvious. Compare it to one of my old CRTs though and the difference becomes very apparent indeed. Just move the mouse pointer side to side fairly quickly and you can see how it becomes quite blurred on an LCD, but not so on a CRT (just a lot of judder, because the Windows pointer animation isn't smooth).

I don't think you'll go wrong with an Asus panel. I certainly don't see many complaints about them in the forums.

response time hasn't been an issue not only in 2012 but since 2009.
i have a Dell 2408 which is touted as "ass-slow" and i've NEVER noticed ANY kind of lag or delay AT ALL.
but i have a friend who falls into the "whiny little b*tch" category(and he's male) that incessantly pesters, whines and cries that he sees input lag everywhere that he needs 120Hz and yadda yadda(makes me want to hit him in the head with a bat).
H ended up buying one of those samsung 950 "3d" gimmick monitors that are the "fad" today, i saw it in operation and wasn't impressed at all, the most i noticed was that the mouse cursor *appeared* to move faster.
and for that he paid a small fortune and got a 6bit eyecancer TN panel in 16:9, pfft

Does the Anti-Glare coating bother you? That seems to be the latest whine/whinge about IPS monitors. I ended up buying a Dell U2412M and I swear some people in various hardware forums act like AG coating for monitors (especially from Dell) is the equivalent of having Christmas tree flocking sprayed on the screen.

I went from a 16ms dell monitor to a 2-4ms viewsonic and I still cannot tell the difference but maybe its my eyes

¿it has an antiglare coating? (that should give you an indication on how much it botters me), the surface in mine is completely matte, turned off it's barely reflective only in direct angle of the light source.
And i've NEVER seen a light bounce in it over the image(and i have my room light behind me).

IF it where a "bother" of any kind, the glorious 8 bit S-IPS, 16:10 and wide gamut MOOOORE than enough make up for it(and if you want, the eye-searing brightness and contrast, i have mine in 0% brightness), those are the important things in a monitor!.

Bought an Asus VE276Q, flipping awesome.... well worth it

the display unit was showing a little streaking during a video so i thought against it, considering i am spending a crapload i dont want to 'deal' with any niggles it may have

I never buy a display model, precisely because of those niggles.
