ATI + nVidia (same computer?)

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if I needed to do something extra when it comes two having both ATi and nVidia in one computer. I currently have a 6950, and I just recently added an 8800GS just for a second monitor only (not for games). I'll be playing games on my main monitor, but I needed the 8800GS for the second monitor.

I just installed the 8800GS a minute ago, and it seems like it was just plug and play, and after Windows installed drivers it was great. Is there anything else that I should do, also is there a way to check to see if my 6950 is taking a performance hit from having an 8800GS in there?

Thanks in advance.

I've used amd +nvidia on the same pc before so it will work.
You dont need to do anything special just plug in the monitor in the card and install drivers.

Thanks, did you notice a performance difference when gaming (or anything else really), or was it pretty much the same?

pretty much the same performance just watch your temps especially the gpus since they will stay close to each other and the increased power consumption.
If you dont have fans on the side of the case is a good ideea to put one to feed the cards with cold air.

Why do you attch a second monitor to a second card? Your AMD card supports at least two monitors.

Yeah I don't understand the need for a second GPU for only two monitors. Your 6950 will handle two monitors just fine. The setup you have now is begging for problems.

Agreed with the two above. That 8800GS would be better used as a Physx card rather than a dedicated card for your second monitor.

The part of the GPU (DAC) that handles monitor output have no effect on gaming performance.
Having 2 GPUs from different Vendors, thus having 2 set of drivers for this purpose is just asking for trouble.

The thing is, I use both monitors for my Xbox 360/PS3 (for fighting games only), and I use HDMI to DVI for both. The 6950 only has one dual-link DVI that I use a DVI - VGA converter with.
