Game Recording, what's your take

I am debating whether to break down and buy this...

http://www.hauppauge.com/site/produc...r2-gaming.html

I am getting slowed down to 15 FPS, when trying to record Guild Wars 2 on a 2560X1440 screen, I am using half size for the recording area, no framerate lock, etc. I have tried recording to ramdisk, SSDs, etc. Nothing gives me improved FPS. Detailed specs to the left.

Any ideas? I am contemplating limiting the affinity of GW2 and Fraps to separate CPUs maybee? I dunno.

i dont think that program will record games coming from your pc. i think its for play station and xbox. i would try seperating the cores. i have talked to other people on other forums and thats the advice they gave me.

Record your PC gameplay, with no delay and no slowdown of your PC!
HD PVR 2 can be connected to the HDMI output of your PC to record your gameplay. With our "no delay passthrough", you can play your game on a TV monitor while recording. And the recording will not slow down your PC since the encoding is done within HD PVR 2!

My only vice with it, is I'd have to lower the resolution to accommodate the device in line. Currently running 1440p, device maxes at 1080p. Now I have no problem with 1080p, it just it's not the native rez on my monitor, and looks like crap.

Try the small guide I wrote for Dxtory in my sig. You got the threads to devote to it, should work just fine and not cost over $150.

I didn't realize they released a version 2 of this. A clan mate of mine a while back bought version one for some videos we were making (click the link to see a PS3 quality example). It was a neat little device and worked very well. Now that is has HDMI that is even better. Unfortunately at that resolution I'd think you'd get slowed down with any program, so an external device like this is probably going to be your best bet.

This would be of use if it was available.

I don't know why your framerates are going so low. I use fraps and I use the same monitor resolution. I record at half resolution (makes 720p) and frames will lock to 30fps. What are you currently using to record?

Guild Wars isn't the best optimized right now. I get like 30 fps in crowded places (it almost seems like it doesn't use the 2nd card, but I haven't ever checked). But he might also mean when it ended the small clips it records. Thats why I stopped using Fraps, everytime it would end that 2 minute or so clip it would just murder my fps for a few seconds, and I couldn't deal with that while playing BF3.

I have an option in Fraps to split up files or not. I think this is a new option to newer versions. Perhaps it is just an issue with dual cards.

Thats nice, I haven't used Fraps in a while, so it might be. So you can continuously record without it compressing at a certain point? And what kind of FPS are you seeing with your 7970? I might have to run a benchmark when I play to see min/avg/max fps.

In crowded places I get around 60 fps but that has to do with the network, not the video card really. Yes, I can continuously record now without Fraps splitting up files.

FFS I finally just bought fraps ><... Wish I had seen this.. Fraps quality is not what I consider true HD.

What do you mean? It doesn't encode anything, it just records as an .avi which is pretty much loss-less. (If I record a video game running 1080p, the video recorded will be 1080p)
