whats the point with 64bit cpus?

whats the point with 64bit cpus when no one can be bothered to develop 64 bit drivers for there products, aside from nvidia and ati hardware manufacturers seem to be lacking 64 bit support fro there hardware, im referring mainly to modems and input devices, i have a 64bit cpu and xp x64 os but cant even connect to the internet because my modem (sagem f@st 800 ) has no 64bit or vista drivers.

its a joke if you ask me, everyone seems to be digging there heels about the move to 64bit and its the end user who suffers. i was on a french forum from early 2005 where someone had emailed sagem regarding this and they said they would release some 64bit drivers by the end of 2005, this didnt happen and they were emailed again and yet again sagem said they would be out by july 2006, nope nothing

the thing about 64bit is that it can be faster than 32bit cpus in 64bit tasks the prob is only that only a few tasks are made for 64bit and as long this wont change 64 bit is a funny thing but not necessary

not too sound too arsey lol but i know that, but still what is the point off them if software or hardware manufacturers dont develop products to take advantage of 64bit, is vista going to be a let down because of this? i know it supports 32bit aswell but i bought this and my last 64bit cpu specifically to run a 64bit os and apps etc etc

I suggest you look up the following:

Release date of Intels 386.
Releasedate of Windows 95 (the first publically used 32bit OS)

very good point and not exactly unusual in the PC hardware world..

sometime there will be a point.. sometime there will be point in all of it unless it gets superceeded by something newer before the point arrives..

the world bought zillions of PCs with mmx.. little knowing that 3dfx had made it completely meaningless..

still it all sells PCs and keeps it all going and gives us something to play with.. he he he

i tryed to say that vista is 64bit rdy so if you have a 64bit cpu youre windows will work in 64bit modus, but programms like games, encoding....
programms will not support 64bit in the beginning and
its like having a dual core cpu where most porgramms dont use both cores

well i have 64bit vista rc1 but my point was relating to 64bit drivers, apart from the big names not a lot of 64bit drivers are being released, in my mind this means theres going to be a lot of shoddy last minute drivers when vista comes out or ppl are going to waste money upgrading to vista because of the lack of drivers

look at windows xp x64 all you have to do is google windows xp x64 drivers and a host of forum topics posted by millions of people looking for 64bit drivers will come up in the results and thats been out for 2 years

its just that the chip manufactores included this feature and they wont the programmers to do the step to but this is a very slow progress because most buissnes pcs are like p3 1000mgh
and something you see the point?
