id recommend a Ref designed model so you can use the GHz OC bios on it after you get the measurements you need

The card is better than what you have but I do not think it would warrant an upgrade to the point where you will see significant enough gains over your current card.

Also the best buzz when you go from a card which is running a game fine at high to one which runs just as good with all sliders to the right.

Bear with me, i'm greatful for the good info!
I'm still unclear about crosfireing {POWER/Performance} keeping the 5870 and adding a 78xx card. {ie=7990??}
The Obvious choise as from the OP the 7900's is by far more powerful {5870XXX then = 79xx today as both fall into the $400 range}
BUT what kind of POWER/Performnce would that secerniero be VS a move to single 7900?

The quick peek at amd can i run it pointed to 7900's for Railsim 3 2012 for "Greatest" performance. I just cheched it since it's the current game tht gives me "maxed" issues.

I too firmly believe in ref. design
I know a LOt of people gave me grief about going with an INTEL M/B, but guess what, of all the other highend board's i've had this is the most stable cool running, and at 5Ghz i'm not gonna complain. True the 2133 ram issue sucked but as Dave said, they've tweaked my 1866 out the ass, and it's just fine, since it's actually pumping as good as most 2133 setups, and my XFX 5870XXX is just fine with the 1300 mem, so there are time's Ref. design pays off.............BIG time

Ok You wont be able to crossfire your 5870 with a 7000 series card. if You go with a 7950 grab a reference model and get the GHz bios which helps it. id compare pricing of the 7800 to the 7900 series and then see performance numbers here.

Ok I can assume youre sticking with the 5870 then?

if You crossfire with your existing card it has to be another 5870 or a 5850

i went from 5870 Xfire to a 7970, in general i was not a huge leap in overall performance but some games did like the upgrade, expecially being at 1080p and when enabling the higher textures and AA.

come xmas ill be picking up another

*as a side note i picked up the gigabyte GHZ edition (1100 mhz) as it was only a few dollars more then a referance card

Yea i'd best stay put. The $ for a 7900 card is just too far away. I was hopeing the 5870&7870 would give me a good budget Grfx setup. Even a single 7800 card wont justify the $ move, I'd have to go to the 7900

But lot more quiet eh ? I was tempted at some Ghz 7800 $$'s, but you show me the 7900 show's it brute power................
Did the use of the 2 5870 keep temps thus fans lower , or do I end up with 2 hair dryer's Lol ?

I also moved from xfire 5870's to single 7970. Almost same performance really. More heat and more driver issues with the xfire setup, but damn near same performance. I think my 3dmark11 scores where maybe 2K apart. 9.8k and 10.8k. This was gaming at 2560x1600.
