GPU recommendation for MMO computer

Hey all,

Friend's building a computer largely to play MMOs and maybe dabble in an FPS here and there, and was looking for a solid GPU that won't go overboard. I was thinking something along the lines of a 5770 (or comparable newer model) but wanted to ask the forum at large.

Budget is ~~$150 and has no issues buying used (in fact all of his system is from TPUers here except the PSU)

Specs:
1280x720 resolution with potential to jump up to 2560x1440 in the near future
Phenom II x4 965 BE
Antec 850watt psu
4 gb RAM (can't remember the model)

Thanks!

At 1440p, you def want at least a 256 bit GPU, so that rules out Nvidia's line at that price range. I say AMD 7850 2GB.

5770 will not be able to handle anything at 1440p.

A new/uses 6870 could be had for that price for maybe even a used 6950 but then again he would need a decent psu to feed those.

brand new GTX 650 ti, on newegg.com 150$~ (Edited, sorry posted wrong link haha)

or go with an HD6870 used, or HD6950 if you can find.. but 1440p, depends on the games, graphics might not be at max...

Will the 2 gigs of vram come into play with the increase in resolution?

If you stay at that resolution a 5770 would be fine. If you do go to 1440p you are going to want more. A I would not go less than a 6870. Try and find a cheap 6950.

2gb should be fine. For me BF3 @2560.1440 on Ultra has not crossed 2gb VRAM, max I've seen is 1.9. I'd say you're safe.

if your looking at mostly MMOs go NVIDIA, not knocking AMD here but NVIDIA tends to perform better when it comes to MMOs especially F2P titles etc.

trying finding a 560Ti 2GB or GTX 660 etc on sale

5770 is solid choice too

I got an amd 5770 in my rig and i`m playing wow in that resolution you were talking about so from my experience you don`t need any better than that , I got 4 gb of system ram and core 2 duo @ 2.8 ghz , my fps goes around 75 .

For 720p he wont but hes talk about a potential jump to 1440p which is why i would reccomend at least a 560ti/7850/6870-6950
