Which SSD is better?

Do you know which SSD is better, as in reliability, speed, and life span? I am having a troubling time comparing them.

I'd say the Vertex 4 will likely be faster, but I would choose Samsung over OCZ for reliability. I have 2 830s and I had a Vertex 4. My Samsung ssds have always been super stable, rock solid. My Vertex was faster but I had a few issues with it, nothing too major though. Lifespan shouldn't be an issue with either, other than where reliability comes in....

The price for the V4 seems really high. I paid $70 shipped for a 120gb a few months ago.

Thanks for the reply. And another question: The samsung 840 has slower max read/write in mb/s. Does that matter?

OCZ will be faster, but not fast enough that you will notice it in real world apps to be honest. Id rather get the samsung drive as it is a lot more reliable.

Better in terms of performance yes. In terms of reliability no. And if your using an SSD as your OS drive, you should really want better reliability then top notch performance. Because regardless, an any SSD is going to be a lot faster then if your using a platter drive right now.

OCZ has the highest failure rates out of all the SSDs on the market right now. OCZ has always had the fastest drives, but reliability is a completely different story.

To others credit, I have heard SOME bad reports of vertex 4's but I have been using it solidly for a few months now with no issues, so in my experience I recommend it

Well I couldn't get my system to run long enough to update the firmware, and when I did the updates would fail. I got 0xF4 BSOD with the Vertex 2 I had 5 minutes after booting to windows everytime, and that all went away when I got a Samsung 830.

Yep and that's in the past. Both of my Vertex 2's worked fine. It really has nothing to do with the drive in question.

I vote for the OCZ Vertex 4. I have 2 256GB GB's and love them

I don't think you will go wrong with either one you choose however.

I have not looked into the 840s in any great detail but I do own a 830 SSD.
Look for reviews on the write speeds of the 840 vs the 830 and see if there is a vast improvement as that is the only down fall I have with mine.

Otherwise the 830 is blisteringly fast so the 840 should be something better.

If I had to choose out of just those two, I would run the samsung. No other reason other than it has a triple core arm processor

For the cash, both would be excellent choices. In daily usage, will not be any difference. On the vertex side, you do get a few more gb which is nice. If you are a gamer... 120gb or even 128 goes pretty fast.

OCZ got a bad rap especially during the early sandforce days. Most need to realize EVERY manufacturer with sandforce based ssd's were getting flogged for bsods and issues. Firmware fixed problems eventually but reputations were hurt. I currently have SSD's with sandforce controllers, marvel controllers and even link-a-media controllers. They are all blisteringly fast and all have been VERY reliable.

As per my recommendation I would choose Samsung SSD over Vertex.

5 Year warranty with Vertex4 plus new Firmware eliminated any issues prior to Vertex 4. OCZ is great with warranties BTW.

I have the 840 and it's been waaayyy faster then the HDD..... even tho it's not the fastest out there it's still wayyy better then runnin my OS on a HDD. OS still boots fast and PS loads very fast....

OP if you haven't yet, read through Anandtech's 840 review. It does beat the 830 in most of the read benches but loses on the writes. Even though it uses TLC NAND, it points out that it did much better than expected, as Samsung did not have to cut perormance.
