Cant remember name of video editing software.

It's a free or open source video suit that lets you crop video files, amoung other things. It was popular with DVD ripping enthusiasts but I can't remember it. Any guesses?

I had to. Problem with those is any time you convert it re-encodes. The file either winds up larger or the quality lower. One could easily spend a day trying all the encoding options trying to find one that outputs a file that matches the original. Digital video really needs a standard like mp3 is for digital audio.

Xmedia recode, german program, has some pretty intense options of converting video file types to others and gives you direct access to the exact quality and codecs you need. it will allow you to open your dodgy video file, encode to an avi, and keep the identical codecs and bitrate in video and audio.

MP3 is a lossy compression format and is certainly not a standard. Blu-ray, audio CD and the music library of an audio enthusiast don't use it. Recoding MP3 also means a lower quality or a larger filesize, for the same reason as as it happens with e.g. H264, MPEG-4 etc. (both being video codecs). Please make sure you know what you are talking about before making such statements.

handbrake is the way to go for conversion. .mp4 is what's used most of the time.

Your filesize/quality complaint will occur with MP3 as well when recoding/transcoding anything else, "most common" or not. My last phrase reffered to that, not to whether something is standard/"most common" or not.
