win 7 taskbar prob

I am having a problem in windows 7 with the taskbar. Some of its icons and notifications rarely won't show up, like the volume. This has happened not only in my computer, but in my friends's too. When i try to costumize the icons and their costumizations, it says that volume is not currently active or whatever program which won't show up. Any fix?

Try these, if you have not:

System icons do not appear in the notification area in Windows Vista or in Windows 7 until you restart the computer

Stating the obvious but if all else fails a fresh install of your os should fix it all up =)
