Western Digital WD Green and WD Red Series Get 5 TB Models in Late 2013

It will be towards the end of 2013, when Western Digital will have 5 terabyte (or 5000 GB) models of its NAS-optimized WD Red, and energy-efficient consumer-optimized WD Green lines of consumer hard drives. According to launch plans unearthed by Russian website AlwaysMoreDigital, the 5 TB WD Red (model: WD50ERFX) and 5 TB WD Green (WD50EZRX) will be launched in Q4 (in or after October 2013). A little earlier than that, the two lines will be updated with 4 TB variants, the WD40ERFX and WD40EZRX. All four drives feature 64 MB of cache, SATA 6 Gb/s interface, and are built in the 3.5-inch form-factor.

Kind of depressing how long it is taking to get beyond 3 TB.

It would seem we have reached the end of the perpendicular recording boom. Hopefully we'll see the laser HDDs sooner rather than later.

High capacity HDDs are for data storage anyways, get a SSD if you want performance.

For storage greens are quite slow despite the minimal gap in benchmarks with the blues ( at least in my experience )

I'm guessing the low price before is what was slowing capacity development.. I mean i bought my Samsung F1 1Tb for $48 and now its around $105 in where i live it.

I'm more worried about Seagate getting a 4TB drive on the market so we can see the prices for 4TB drives come down a little. I'm out of space, but I really hate to buy 3TB drives with 4TB drives available. But I also don't like paying double for a 4TB drive only to get 1TB more space...

I only have about 1TB free out of 9 on my server. It's all JBOD because I bought my drives piecemeal. Hoping to build a nice big RAID5 array around tax time. I'd like to see these release soon, so the 3 and 4TB models go down.

The upper limit has been 4 TB, not 3 TB, for quite a while. Thus, the 5 TB capacity means a technological breakthrough (or at the very least, massive cross-patent licensing) happened.

You can never have enough hard drive space. Having more hard drive space means you'll want bigger files. Wanting bigger files means hard drive space goes down faster. It's a vicious cycle. Thus demand for it will never go down. Though hard drive capacity not keeping up with space required for high-res videos does make it much worse.

EDIT: How about 2 TB VelociRaptor drive while you're at it, WD?

Hitachi has had the 4's out for quite awhile. Good to see WD is finally catching up. So based on this, Hitachi will have a 5 out is a couple of months, Seagate a 4tb by March and complaining about how they ARE the market leader.

So based on this, Hitachi will have a 5 out is a couple of months, Seagate a 4tb by March and complaining about how they ARE the market leader.
