GK110 / GTX 780 pre-launch leaks & info

It looks like NVIDIA were planning to release a gaming card this year based on it after all. Let's hope so!

Too soon for a new release of a new series of cards. The GTX 680 came out in March of this year...

Originates at Sweclockers. Any Swedes out there translate? Even better, find out Sweclockers source is?

They'll be pre-empting a possible 8970 coming out*. But to make it work within a power envelope they'll have to slow the speeds or cut some of the compute. GK100 never made it to light of day for whatever reason so hopefully GK110 isn't compromised in any way.

*And quite possibly it wont see the light of day until it's needed.

Meh.

Last paragraph mentions disabling circuitry. And also end of this year or start of next year. Given the deviation for rumour error - I'd say April 2013.

I read that the 780 was being pushed back to first quarter 2013. 15 SMX huh?!

If there's gonna be a Tesla K20 by the end of the year, then it's perfectly plausible that nvidia will make a consumer graphics card at the same time. My money is on seeing this card around December/January.

Let's bet!!

If GK110 comes out as daddy kepler in Dec or Jan, I'll paypal you £10. Any later, and you give me the money

Haha, lol. While I think it's likely to happen, I'm not that confident to actually bet on it.

Oh, sod it, let's do it! Let's define the parameters for the bet as the date of the nvidia press release, as that's when it's officially released, even if paper launched. The product name won't matter either, just as long as it's a GK110-based card.

On top of that, I think this needs to hurt a bit, so shall we make it £20?

You ok with all this?

Paper launch? Bet's off man, paper launches are like cliffhangers - they guarantee no date! Just an illusive promise.

I just don't see why Nvidia would have bothered with the 690 if they already had a 780 planned. No company is going to mess with a dual-GPU solution like that if they have another option.

Imho I cant see these hitting stores this year, of more interest to me is the timeing of these leaks, Amd must have a release eminant as there is no reason i can think of for nvidia to release this card this year.

You chicken! One has to take into account the possibility that this could happen. How do you suggest to handle it if it happens, then?

c'mon, grow a pair and keep your own bet. Anyway, nvidia are just as likely to hard launch it, so I wouldn't worry that much about it.

This is the exact reason why I do not think it will release this year. If nvidia does release this card the GTX 690 prices will have to lower by a bit. Either that or the GTX 780/695 (What ever you want to call it) Would be so god damn expensive Very few people would by it. Lets face it the card they are showing the specs for above would probably beat the GTX 690. I say H1 of next year we see release.

Found a chinese site-pchome.net today that has posted some specs of the high-end GTX 700 series - 790, 780 & 770.. Apparently all are based on GK110..
although I am not fully buying this, I am posting the info nonetheless (as the details were updated today and might hopefully hold some truth). also the price quote says 'upcoming'.. here are the translated links anyway

gtx 790 - 6GB, 384 bit x2
gtx 780 - 3GB, 384 bit
gtx 770 - 2GB, 256 bit

this info might be half true or even a dud.. so dont forget the salt

GeForce 7950 GX2 - June 5, 2006
GeForce 8800 GTX - November 8, 2006
5 months difference

GeForce 9800 GX2 - March 18, 2008
GeForce GTX 280 - June 17, 2008
3 months

GeForce GTX 295 - January 8, 2009
GeForce GTX 480 - March 26, 2010
14 months -7 months of GF100 delay == 7 months

GeForce GTX 590 - March 24, 2011
GeForce GTX 680 - March 22, 2012
12 months

Average 6.75 months, ~7

GeForce GTX 690 - April 29, 2012
+7
November/December

And since talking about intentions, what could or what a company is willing to do, rather than actual releases, we might as well go with the 3 month or 5 month figures. Certainly Nvidia was willing to go with a dual GPU back then despite the short time until the next gen.

The date comparisons don't mean much tbh.

You could also look at how quickly the dual cards followed the single cards.

GTX 280 = June 2008, GTX 295 = Jan 2009 (7 months)

GTX 480 = Mar 2010, Dual GF100 not feasible...

GTX 580 = Nov 2010, GTX 590 = Mar 2011 (4 months)

GTX 680 = Mar 2012, GTX 690 = Apr 2012 (1 month)

Using date comparisons you'd expect the 690 to have appeared a lot later in the year. I think we should relate to W1zzards post about CeBit 2013. He's one of the few people here who doesn't speculate.

Yeah, I'm not making any assumption on when it'd release. I was just pointing out that if it comes down to when Nvidia wants to release it based on the release of the previous dual-GPU card it could be anything after 3 months (not posible already lol) and average of 7. Besically that when the "next gen" is released has very little to do with when the dual-GPU card was released.

But we're talking about the 690 in this case supposedly being replaced by another kepler card with the rumored GK110 780. In all of the examples you listed you have dual-GPU cards being replaced by single-GPU cards from an entirely new generation, in most cases bringing new feature sets also.

Nvidia releasing the 690 before the supposed 780 would be like if they officially released something like this right before they released the 480. There is a reason you only ever saw cards like those from 3rd party board partners.

No it's not the same. GK104 was the mid-range part when development started, but it became the high-end part of this generation and hence the name and it has a dual-GPU card based on it. GK110 takes the GTX780 name for a reason too.

Don't pay too much attention to "Kepler" name, thinking it represents one and only generation. It's just a name for an architecture which could span many genrations, true generations, not GTX480->580. For example the 8800 and GTX280 were the same architecture, just with the units arranged differently, but this distinction is not bigger than between Fermi GTX480/580 and GTX460/560. Another example, 7800/7900 GTX and 6800 GTX were the same architecture, which was almost the same as 5800/5900*. The point is that YES, GK100/110 was the high-end chip of this generation, but Nvidia decided to postpone it for "next gen". When it comes to the actual chip implementation and end result for the consumer is no different at all than 9800 vs GTX 280. Same architecture, same node...

* And of course if we go to Ati/AMD HD2000, HD3000, HD4000, HD5000 and HD6000 up to Barts (HD6800) all use the same underlying architecture, with little differnces beyond supporting new DirectX features. But in this case AMD chose to give each "generation" a different name, but AMD gives codenames to dual chips too so...

32 Tesla K20 (GK110) are at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Roughly another 1000 are expected this week. The ball is rolling.

well, this comes as a surprise although I don't know if will turn out true.. the pic from the source 'seems' legit but the source itself(OBR-Hw) is not among the well trusted.. am posting this because of the supporting pic.. also this isn't directly claimed by OBR-Hw, hence gives some impression of credibility:

here's the quote from OBR
Quote:
One thing is certain, and the information comes from the traditionally well-informed source. Successor GeForce GTX 670/680 will NOT be based on core GK110. These cards will be based on a completely different, new core ... more detail later.

pic showing GK11x

also, heat-spreader seems to be back.. becos it's a big chip?
