GTX 670 @ 1440x900
Hi friends,
i'm going to build a system that goes like this I5-3470 8 GB memory and a GTX 670. I have a 19" screen that max res. is 1440x900. I was wondering what will happen if i use this build (GTX 670) at 1440x900 resolution. Will i have no problem playing skyrim with mods at this resolution on ultra graphics with AA with no problem. |

Overkill, you could get away with AMD 7950 or a GTX660 at that resolution

I agree. Get the 670. The EVGA FTW is a nice one too if you can score one.

Would still highly recommend you get a higher resolution monitor asap. 6 Months to getting a new monitor is kinda a long way still.

OP If your gonna buy a new monitor in 6 months, you might aswell sit on your hands and wait if you can...
the new AMD and Nvidia cards should be out by then and give you a lot more choices to pick from aswell as price drops for the older models/generation of cards that are being replaced if the new gen isnt for you.

Actually the 7870XT (Tahiti LE) will be a great deal for that resolution.

But he is getting a new monitor after the GPU purchase so why not just get the GTX 670?

OP you have money now, the 670 will serve it's purpose now, and in the future if you go 1080p or 1440p. Technology is always advancing. If you wait you will be waiting forever. If you shop around, some places are offering rebates so the 670 costs the same, or less than a 660ti. |

If you can't get a monitor right now that can actually make use of your new hardware, why bother until you can? I think it would be really disappointing to go to all that trouble and expense and then have to wait six months to see the result.

Whether a GTX 670 is overkill or not at 1440x900 or not depends on what framerates and quality settings you're happy with. If you want to virtually guarantee the smoothest vsync-locked solid super smooth 60Hz frame rate and maxed quality settings with the latest games, then getting a very powerful card like this will help to avoid any frame drops and the unpleasant judder that comes from them.
There's a motto for computer gaming which says that you can't have too much rendering power - and I agree with it. If money was no object, I'd put two GTX 690s in my system and be done with it. Then, when the GeForce Titan comes out and if it's more powerful, I'd replace the 690s with four of those (and upgrade the rest of the system to match).

Just get the 670 and enjoy great framerates and all the eye candy RIGHT NOW and when you get a new monitor later, determine then if you need more GPU horsepower or not.

That's great. The more competition in the marketplace the better.
