i7 3820 vs i7 3930k

To put this in a nutshell, I have to say like this:

The 3820 has scored great on the 3DMark hardware channel, so has the 3930k. But would it be worth paying almost twice as much for a hexa-core CPU?

I am planning on using my new CPU primarily for high performance gaming... ultra high. I'm going to play games like Need for speed: Hot pursuit, Serious Sam 3, Crysis 1-2 (My current FX-8150 is not supported for crysis 1),Borderlands 2 and Metro: Last Night. Those are probably going to be the most demanding games. I might do some rendering in HammerEditor and Sony Vegas too. Right now I am leaning a lot towards the 3820. Get the 3820, IF you have a doubt between the two then you don't need the additional cores.

Two quick questions before you leave,
1st Will the i7 3820 beat my FX-8150 really hard?

2nd What motherboard would go nicely with the CPU? I was thinking ASUS Rampage IV Extreme, but the Sabertooth Z77 seems to be just as good for slightly less money

you need a X79 mb for a 2011 cpu

I'd honestly wait for Haswell, since you are not going to use/want the additional cores socket 2011 provides you.

The FX-8150 is a good CPU, buying a 3820 would be a marginal upgrade, I didn't see that you already had that CPU.

I can clearly say that the latest AMD processor are far from being a bottleneck in any game unless it is poorly coded.
Multithreaded performance is there, they lack on per core performance, that's all.

I think you are underestimating the FX lineup, they aren't good as Intel offerings, but they arent THAT much worse that they need to be dumped.

Yes get i7 3820 and OC it to ~ 4.6ghz, it shouldn't be that hard.

Asus P9X79 is also cheap and very good motherboard.


Also save that extra cash for later so you could upgrade to lest say a 8core (16threads) Ivybridge.

the only reason you'd get a 3930k is if you do some hardcore rendering etc IMO for your use I might suggest a i5 2500k or 3570K

I got swept under the excitement of upgrading... And the reason as to why I am changing to Intel is so I get better support, and though my 8150 is great! (well aware of it) I am also changing to Intel in hope to avoid all the hassle with my Sabertooth 990FX, which could also be a problem with my SilverStone GoldStrider 1200w power supply... I won't go into details in this message. Besides I'm selling my other stuff to a friend so that he might get an awesome pc for less money.

I am not underestimating the FX series. I ****ing love them! I'm just of issues with AM3+ supported motherboards. I had a SABERTOOTH 990FX r1.0 later on I got a CROSSHAIR V FORMULA, which also had major issues. Like the alarm for my cpu cooler (CoolIT vantage) kept going off for no reason. I then returned it and bought a Sabertooth 990FX r2.0 (Because I sold the old one) Which has minor issues. Every time I disconnect the power source, the LED turns off and after 5 seconds turns on for half a minute.

Heh, I can go with that "swept under the excitement of upgrading" sentiment, when I upgraded my main rig, from an LGA775 X9650, I went all the way with an Asus Rampage IV Extreme + 3960X. It's the anticipation, the planning and when everything falls into place.....heaven!

Even the BD FX are pretty good for gaming, my 2nd rig has an FX8120 @3.7ghz (can make 4.2ghz easy enough) and I run a apir of GTX670 in SLi mode with it, hasn't let me down in any of the game I've played on it. BTW, Asus make excellent boards, especially the ROG line. I'm a big fan of the ROG boards, and I happen to have a CHVF too, no issue whatsoever. Asus has great customer support here in my neck of the woods. My Rampage IV Extreme has some SATA port issue recently, coupled with some power regulation issue which the tech guy mentioned after testing the board (wasn't aware of this, only knew that my SATA ports were faulty). Anyway, in just under two weeks, the board was sent to Asus in Taiwan for RMA, I went to the service center and got my replacement board. That's why I'm an Asus ROG fanboy....

But I think I will go with the Asus Sabertooth X79... I was going to get the same motherboard but then I realized I was going to need a new cooler :s

So I need a cooler that won't get in the way of my RAM (I'm planning on reusing my crossair vengeance 1600mhz 4x4) and IF POSSIBLE not getting in the way of mounting a side 200mm fan in my NZXT Phantom. I know that the only cpu cooler that would fit the demands there would be a stock cooler. I can live without a side fan, if the only good cpu coolers are over sized or are water coolers that have to sit at the back of the case.... oh and ROG FTW. I have a like a 10'' sticker on the back of my laptop
