sndvol32.exe, run it, make sure your MIC is not "muted"...?

Be sure you plugged it into the RIGHT port on the back of your PC where your sound card prongs are located, use your mobo or soundcard manual IF you need it for reassurance & all that!

* Basics @ first...

first things first: make sure its plugged in the right plug. usually its a salmon-colored one if its a 3.5mm minijack.
secondly, make sure your mike isn't muted. doubleclick the speaker icon in your system tray, and check the mike settings
third, make sure your mike is the default microphone device for the system. go to control panel -> sounds (something like that), and muck around there.

yes everything is hooked up right. can't find a damn thing in control panel to turn it on. Checked the little speaker icon in the tool bar and made sure the "mic" was on and still nothing. What a rip. Did manage to get the "mic" to work somewhat. I can hear myself just fine. guess I'll have to call geeksquad.

sndvol32.exe is one part, the Options menu, View submenu, & be SURE Microphone is not checked off as MUTE @ the bottom of the Microphone column & BE SURE ITS VOLUME SLIDER IS SET "WAY" UP, to its max.

To turn on the little icon noting the sound options in the tasktray (while in control panel)? Well, I use "CLASSIC VIEW" first of all, & it is what I have showing here & what I am accustomed to? Go to "Sound and Audio Devices" icon in Control Panel first.

This also controls the volume on the device (mass override of all of the sliders in sndvol32.exe in fact) & there is a checkbox called "Place Volume icon in the taskbar"... the "Advanced" button just directly summons sndvol32.exe (the tool I initially instructed you to use).

You will want to look around in THIS particular area (Sounds and Audio Devices Properties) & find where it is you are messed up.

You can try "geeksquad", there is nothing wrong w/ that... whatever works, but it's also your monies spent.

My guess is, that if you mess around in "Sound and Audio Devices Properties"? You'll fix it...

(Another 'decent' idea is to update any & all drivers for the particular soundcard or onboard mobo sound you use)

I am kinda suprised that no one stated the possible obvious answer.
Check and make sure you have the mic feature hooked up on your motherboard.
On one of my builds I didnt hook this feature up, hence I cant use a mic, and the other one I did.

I do both @ once SOMETIMES...

(E.G.-> work, take break, & post (especially when I hit a "wall" on the job - I walk away from it for a bit, it helps))...

It's a hassle, & I miss details if I don't read what others wrote though... I know WHAT you mean, by all means!

I appreciate everyones input. i did mange to get them to work for a "moment". Although I was hearing myself talk through the headphones. But the mic did test through the little test sequence. That was earlier this morning after work. Now after "firing" up the PC again i get nothing. The headphones work but not the mic. It is "unmuted" and everything is set just like last night but nothing. Maybe they are defective? Well they are working again. Are you supposed to hear your own voice through the headphones?

yes, I put the sndvol32.exe control panel on the task bar. set everything up as shown. When going into advanced controls for the micrphone there are 2 boxes. One says "Front Panel Microphone" the other "Microphone Boost". With both "checked" on i get nothing during the set-up and testing of the device, With the MIC boost as the onlty one checked I can complete the function test and it shows it as working. i just get to hear myself over the headphones.

So, this was ALL in the area (Sounds & Multimedia in Control Panel basically) which I asked you to take a poke @ & look over & others posted the photos to as a guide for you?

If so, good, because this WILL probably happen again... thank goodness forums are searchable generally (good knowledgebases). AND, good anyhow, even IF it wasn't my points noted. Point being? YOU are A-OK now!

You can mute the microphone and other people will still be able to hear you. Then you wont have to hear yourself talking.
