14C in Houston -> E6400 @ 4.0ghz on air (only 4 BNCH)
we had a fat fat blue norther come thru.
so i opened my window and did some tinkering with my typical 24/7 3.6ghz rig ... was surprised that i hit a wall at 4.0-ish ... temps were fine ... but for some reason i couldn't get it past 4.1 or so ... just cycled endless reboots; played with memory timings as i figured this was the culprit but ran out of time (wanted to play CS:S for at least an hour before crashing!). fun though ... took about two seconds off my superPI 1meg time: .... ![]() so if i went to water or phase ... how would i best solve this bottleneck at 4.0 ghz? probably the memory settings? maybe something related to northbridge or southbridge (which are at their default auto settings)? ++also ... look at the crazy cpu-z reading of 1.2 volts! funny. i've got it set at like 1.67 or so in the bios; asus tools shows the most accurate.

![]() near 59 and beechnut. got just below freezing last night ... i could only handle the cold for benching for about an hour; after i hit the 4 ghz i quit. forgot to validate my cpuz screen though so gonna go for 2.1 or 2.2 tonight. just got home and opened the window. whooo. big friday night! ![]() jbh.

Vcore @ 1.200, 1.62, and 3.25v?? Whats you Vcore in bios? I can't get my 6600 past 3.0ghz but I am afraid to tweak the voltage (I got a good cooler, just a wuss).
Anyway, my best superpi was 14s flat, I wonder if you should run msconfig and boot without any startup items. Bet you shave off another 1.5s or so. edit: im retarded...learn to read the post thats between the pictures and the sig.... Last edited by Mediocre; Dec 1, 2006 at 11:50 PM. |

i'll try the msconfig bit ... good idea; i had quite a bit running at the time. the 4 meg cache of the 6600 makes for a pretty good performance jump over the 6400's 2meg cache (superpi time speaking anyway) ... but i think i could still improve it with some tweaking. will post pics if it gets cold enough to run some tests tonight. ps > i don't think you should wuss out at 3.0ghz ... that's hardly much of a clock at all for your chip; most guys with 6600's run quite safely around 3.2 to 3.5 ghz 24/7. really. what's the danger? unless you want to keep your chip for more than 5 years ... in which case ... i totally agree. hell. i'll be buying a new chip every 12 months at minumum! ![]() what was that saying ... some prophet of old ... "better to burn out...than to... ", argh! forget the rest. thanks for the comments!

as long as your temps are fine, it doesn't hurt you to up the volts. i run daily at 3.6ghz with volts set at 1.5 in the bios; of course, the P5B Dlx treats volts a bit wierd and so i'm actually usually running around 1.45. not dangerous in my opinion. temps are about what a 6400 would run at stock speeds with a stock cooler so i really can't see any harm in it. and the performance increase is quite significant.
