New Comp, Lan Connectivity Issues?
Hooked up a new computer to my existing ethernet cable, no router. Im getin a icon saying it has limited or no connectivity, I try to do the repair and says renewing IP address can not be completed.
I've tried about everything I can think of, includeing reinstalling windows just incase and was out of ideas, though I dont know alot about the subject I would think it might be the conection but its what this computer is on, Im just unplugin all the wires from one and puting them in the back of the other. So I can only have one runing at a time. Anyhelp or advice on what might be going on is really appreciated

Hold on a sec - if you have no router does that mean that you are making a direct connection between two computers? If so, you need to make sure you use a crossover cable, and then you may need to assign a static IP address, which you can do by following this guide.

Nope sorry, wasent sure how to word it. Bascially im only hooking up one computer at a time to the net. I just unplug the cable from one and put it on the other. Im not worried about getin them both online. The 2nd computer is for the kids, so im just trying to get it online to update, d/l a few things etc etc.

Ok, a few things you can try to help.
1) Some ISPs only let you connect using one MAC address. If you suspect this to be the case, you will need to contact your ISP 2) Restart the modem whilst the computer is off, wait 30 seconds and then turn on the PC 2) Ensure that there is no firewall blocking your computer from connecting 4) Click on start and then select run. Type in "services.msc" without quotes and then ensure that DHCP Client, DNS Client and Network Location Awareness are enabled and started 5) On the PC that does work, go to start and then select run. Type in "cmd" and then once the window opens type in "ipconfig /all". Record the IP address, default gateway and DNS server and then follow the guide that I posted earlier and see if it works then. Remember to repair after trying each of these, and if none work it is likely to be your ISP only accepting one MAC address (which is unique to a network adaptor). If you google a guide on how to change this you may be able to solve your problem, but it may be quicker to contact your ISP. |

i having a simlar problem...
i cannot direct conect to my modem, i just get limited connectivity (cannot get the IP), but when i plug into a router than my pc, everything works (router is able to get IP). talk to some forums...can be the modem. Also, if you have two NICS on the pc that is working, just do shared connection, and a cable to the other. |

Yes, as Jimmy said, it is most like a MAC Address problem. I had the same problem as I really have like 2 routers. The one is a Westell Bellsouth DSL modem. The other is my netgear wireless router. So I have phone line, WESTELL, Netgear Wireless Router and then that is hardwired to pc. After I removed my Static IP I set with Westell and Bellsouth (had it tuned to my netgear as well) netgear would not let me connect to my modem. Removed it and it could connect to internet. I had to change some settings and renew my address and after 15 restarts, found out it was my MAC Address. A simple call to your local ISP will fix this. And then, you will be in heaven. That guide is a bad guide either or you could go to http://www.portforward.com they have lovely guides.

I know when I got a new cable modem I had to call my ISP and get my MAC changed. But using the same cable modem and just a diff computer, could that still be the problem?
