Blu-ray catching HD DVD

According to the latest figures published by Nielsen VideoScan, sales of pre-recorded Blu-ray media have outsold HD DVD by a huge margin in the USA. During the first week of January, HD DVDs were selling at 47.14% of the rate of Blu-ray disks, with that figure falling to 38.36% during the second. Although overall more HD DVD disks have been sold so far (they have been out for longer), the PS3 (which can play Blu-ray) seems to have given a huge boost to Blu-ray sales after shipping over a million consoles in the same time that just 175,000 HD DVD players were shipped to the US. The Xbox 360 HD DVD drive may help to balance this out a little, but for many the PS3 seems the best value way to move to High Definition.

Agreed on that. Factoring the cost of the primo bundle (400) plus the HD-DVD add on (200) you get the cost of a ps3. Am I the only one to see this? Factoring in taxes, the 360 is slightly more with the addon. Of course, you can elect to not add on the optional drive, whereas the PS3 has it built in.

I know Blu-Ray was selling slightly better than HD-DVD, but more than double the rate is surprising.

Actually that was the opposite of what you said. There was a post here that originally said the Porn Industry was going to back HD-DVD, which I assume is what you were basing your statement on, however that says the Porn Industry will not be HD-DVD exlusive.

I dont see why HD-DVD and Blue-Ray are comparible. Its like comparin DVD to HD-DVD - not even the same generation. Blue-Ray has nearly twice the space that HD-DVD has while HD-DVD has nearly twice the space that dual-layer DVDs have, so it would seem like DVD -> HD-DVD -> Blue-Ray.
The only reason i see why HD-DVD could "win" is if there is really no need for more than 15GB for HD content and HD-DVD is cheaper, but the data rate could be so much higher on Blue-Ray and if they will actually amp up the data rate on the Blue-Ray in comparison to HD-DVD, then it would be like what we had with the Xbox and the PS2, where the same game would have better graphics on the Xbox..

HD-DVD > Blu-ray? dont think so, there about on par, blu-ray does have a bigger capacity but the creators lost out on quality in order to improve security (of which didnt last long anyway). So blu-ray, like the ps3 has its potentials, but the supposed quality isnt as good as HD-DVD

Lost out on quality to improve security which didn't last long? I am confused. The producers have the option to use almost the exact same AACS protection on either format, which has been broken. However, the option to use Sony's protection(BD+) is also there on Blu-Ray, which has not been broken.

Supposed quality isn't as good as HD-DVD? Have you seen the two side by side on the same hi-end TV. I know I have, they both look the same.

I work at an Electronics store. I watch High Definition movies(Blu-ray & HD-DVD) all the time and they look the same. Some movies are better masterized than others but the format doesn't matter.

Well done to one of the first people who isn't basing their opinion upon what they read on Wikipedia!

They're outselling by 2-3x, however, there are 5-6x as many blu-ray players. Too early to tell. I have both players. And have came to the conclusion that neither format will look better than another. The quality of the picture is based solely on the film itself and how it was made - which is why I think it's taking so long for LOTR and The Matrix to print on HD DVD - they want to make it look as good as possible.

Well "blue ray" is older than "HD-DVD" (when the dvd rose, the development of blue-ray was in progress)...Sony already got 7 out 9 studios to sign on it before it was released to the public.

Hmm, I had no idea Blu-Ray was that far on top.

I think I'm just gonna try to get both, eventually. Although I'll be getting HD-DVD first in the form of the 360 add-on.
