Microsoft Live OneCare Fails Vista Users

In a recent test carried out by Virus Bulletin, Microsoft’s own antivirus software, Live OneCare, was one of four packages which failed. The test involved 15 antivirus packages designed for businesses using Windows Vista, all of which were released about two months ago. To pass the test, each package had to detect a set of viruses that are known to be circulating without giving any false positives. However, Live OneCare 1.5, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.1i, G DATA AntiVirusKit 2007 and Norman VirusControl 5.90 all failed. Other software, including that from Computer Associates, Fortinet, F-Secure, Kaspersky, Sophus and Symantec, passed without problems. McAfee claims that the test did not use its latest update, whilst Microsoft has pledged to improve its software.

Kudos to everyone else....but I could have guessed Mcafee was an egg, based on my experiences with it when I got a trojan.

McAfee used to be pretty damn respectable. Hell, at one point in time it was either them or Norton (Symantec). Ive used McAfee before (internet security and regular virus scanner software) and have had nothing but great luck with them. Havent used them lately as Im using ZoneLabs Zone Alarm Pro Internet Security Suite.

Interesting to hear the comments about McAfee

1./ That it failed
2./ That there is an 8.1i version... we are running 8.0 an the engine
3./ I thought SDATs kept the system up to date (we have engine 5100 virus definitions 4956). Obviously there is more admin work to be done, i.e. finding an update to v8.1. Better look into that one asap, esp. if existing engine is failing a Virus test!

I use Kaspersky myself. Fairly easy on the resources, highly configurable, and very accurate. The only thing that I would have any concern about may be the firewall. But, I have a hardware firewall, so I'm not too concerned.

Another Zonelabs Internet Security Suite user here, small footprint, very stable, and I pair it with spyware doctor and registry mechanic to keep all my bases covered.

I use avast! and Comodo. Comodo firewall is great (better than Norton when I used to use that) and avast! is the best free antivirus I've tried. AntiVir was almost as good, I think AVG is ok but not as good as the latest avast!.
