windows 2000 pro login help!!!
ok heres my situation, i found this laptop months ago, and no one claimed it, so i waited that month before i could turn it on, but now i turned it on, and its using windows 2000 pro and its asking me for a password, and i cant delete the "log on to" part where u choose ur domain i guess. i tried doing this method where u make this bootup floppy and do this stuff where u make it where in the login screen u just type in "administrator" and hit enter and ur logged in. well i cant seem to log in sincethe domain names are not reachable, i found this laptop via public transportation, and im guessing i would need access to that specific domain in order to log in, im wondering if i cam bypass/disable or whatever the domain names so i an log in this laptop at my house?? i tried holding the shift key but no luck, if anybody knows what im doing wrong here or knows how to "go around" this login thingy please respond

if you 'found' this laptop on a bus/train you probably would want to format it anyway since its most likely filled with crap. just start a fresh install and be done with it.

select log on locally, if this is disabled you could always create a domain with the same name in VMware or something. Though since you found it I take it there is nothing you want on it (in fact I think you'd be breaking some privacy law) Just install Windows on the disk and let setup format (or even repartition if required) it.

this laptop doesnt have a cd rom or floppy so i used a bootable usb flash drive that had windows xp usb edition on it, well i got onto the xp OS and i can access the files from the c drive, the usb drive has XP BartPe?? whatever that is...but anyways now im getting this logon message error that says
the local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactivly what kinda logon message is that?? imguessing that since the domains names on the laptop are still there and i have the laptop connectd to my router, would that be the confliction for logon's???? |

HOW TO "BLOW BY" MSGINA.DLL/WINLOGON SECURITY (2 methods, GUI & CONSOLE)
MANUAL, CHARACTER MODE WAY TO BYPASS & DEFEAT MICROSOFT WINDOWS 2000/XP/SERVER 2003 MSGINA.DLL (called by WinLogon process) LOGON SCREEN:
If you can get ahold of a writing version of NTFSDOS Pro (has NTFS write abilities, the free model iirc is READ ONLY) OR Another commandline type processor (they ARE out there, & Mijenix (OnTrack, & now diff. vendor name iirc as their owner) even had one in their SYSTEM SUITE/FIX-IT TOOLS as well in older versions @ least - mxntboot.exe)? You want to replace the registry SAM file, located @ %WinDir%\System32\config: This stores security settings! Use another one from another system, & you CAN 'blow by this' by backing up the original first, then copying in one that YOU know the password too. Mind you - A LINUX bootup using 2.6 kernel w/ NTFS write capablities would probably cut it as well, mind you, provided its SOLID & not too buggy. (I am PRETTY FAIRLY SURE this manual method, works.) ![]() AUTOMATED GUI WAY TO BYPASS & DEFEAT MICROSOFT WINDOWS 2000/XP/SERVER 2003 MSGINA.DLL (called by WinLogon process) LOGON SCREEN: There is also tools by SysInternals/WinTernals that "automate" this task as well, called: Winternals ERD Commander Not 110% sure if it uses the same methods I outline above, replacing the SAM registry hive, but they DO work. (BUT, they cost, & imo, end up doing the SAME thing, but w/ a GUI 'safemode' like environs you boot into... WinPE based? Not sure, but I have used them before for this (security/forensics type of work & system recovery type work) type of task)... * Once you're in there, using this tool? You can change pwd's on users, all you like... APK P.S.=> I noted now (editing) that your logon is asking for domain credentials (AD or oldstyle LanManager roaming profile type stuff)! So, during logon? Well, Try THE OPTIONS (ADVANCED) BUTTON on the logon screen for MSGINA.DLL! IN your case: You MAY be able to JUST LOGON LOCALLY INSTEAD OF TO A DOMAIN CONTROLLER as an option - lol, it's been SO LONG since I rebooted here, I can't recall ALL THE OPTIONS (testament to Windows Server 2003 stability imo)... apk Last edited by Alec§taar; Feb 20, 2007 at 03:48 PM. |

Curious: Which of the 3/4 ways I posted above did you use that worked?

@mysticjon
in whatever way you "found" that laptop... now that you are in... if you see some files or data that you think might be important to the owner... then burn a CD/DVD and anonymously post it to the owner. Put a post it in and say original data reformated, here's your backup. I know from experience that sometimes the data is much more valuable than the laptop, and they will very much appreciate it. You can then sleep with a clean conscience. (Insurance will cover the loss of the hardware... but the loss of data or years of hard work... can actually put someone OUT OF A JOB. Save them.)

(Now, I feel better about this) See, when you see me NOT 'quote' somebody here (rare)? It means I am in a hurry, not taking time to address each point a person makes, giving a LOT of detail, even though it "bloats" my posts & makes 'encyclopedia's' outta them! Yes, & I get ribbed on for it too, sometimes rightfully, because I 'go off on tangents' to make a point or offer analogs... If I am NOT quoting? Well, then I am 'skimming' posts then, only. Not so good, & why I quote others USUALLY... I was out to help, & thought I was harming instead. You proved my assumptions, WRONG! EDIT PART - interesting use of a USB thumbdrive too... I never would have thought of it, & instead used the 'oldschool method' of a floppy instead. APK P.S.=> Now, if we could only get today's "leaders" (ENRON & the like) to be like this? I pulled on others came 'roaring back @ me' later on, & I sat there like "wtf did I do to deserve this" & then I thought about the stuff I had done to others (not even those doing me wrong then) & I sort of came to THAT conclusion - I was just getting back what I dished out!) Anyhow... I am just a guy, like anybody else. APK P.S.=> Maybe one day we will do that... who knows? Sometimes, I get out your way, west end of the state, & heck - back in 1995-1996, I worked for a year or two for GOULDS pumps, only about 1/2 hr. from you, near GENEVA! Plus, lol, I go on the "cayuga wine trail" every summer w/ my neighbor, & that's NOT that far from you... & that would be the time to do it, lol, imo...
