Strange Driver Issues x1950XT

My X1950XT was working just fine until about an hour ago. I was playing Oblivion when it froze for about 15 seconds and the graphics driver reloaded. It was ok for a few minutes before it did the same thing again. I thought I had a driver problem so I used driver cleaner to get rid of the old drivers and then re-installed them. I still have the same problem. I have uninstalled ATItool just because I thought that might be causing some sort of conflict, but I have the same problem. I made sure it wasn't just oblivion by running AoEIII which gave me the same problem. The funny thing is, if I go into a game and then exit, it leaves it at the game's resolution (1280x1024) and not the usual desktop resolution (1024x768). Any ideas?

By the way, memtest and prime95 give no errors. I'm starting to wonder if I'm going to have to RMA this dumb thing.

Sounds like it might be temps or voltage related to the card. If driver reinstall didn't fix it try reinstalling DX and see if that fix it. Also go to run box and type "dxdiag" and run through the various test to see if the problem pops up.

This card gets extremely hot with default fan settings. However, it has been working just fine for weeks now. However, a few days ago it starting giving me some strange v-sync issues (the top of the screen and the bottom didn't seem to be connecting very well when turning quickly) while playing oblivion. Now this. I'm going to try running it with the fan on 100% constantly just to see what happens. As for voltage...it gets the default voltage according to rivatuner and my PSU is plenty adequate, so who knows.

Well, now it's not crashing with the fan in dustbuster mode (100%, 5000RPM). So, evidently, it doesn't like to run at default settings. It did for the first few weeks, but now it won't. I'm going to keep testing, but I know I need a new fan.

Well this is odd, I uninstall ATItool and the v-sync problems go away. I re-install and they come back.

Yeah yeah, I need to get a new monitor. However I need $$$ for that. The monitor doesn't have any problems in any other games...aside from sucking.

Still could be heat related, although it may be more than that thats affecting it. Hope you resolve it, I here good things on the Arctic Silencer for that model.

I'm getting a zalman vf-900CU. Probably going to order it today. I still wonder why it was perfectly fine for weeks then went nuts. Plus, it was fine for hours in Oblivion and then started crashing after about 5 seconds.

This thing is inching its way towards an RMA. Now it is crashing at 45C. I'm going to try to clean the drivers again and then run it to see if it restarts my system...again. I can run ATItool's fuzzy dice for about 10 seconds before my system restarts. It's running at default voltage and default 3d speeds....45c and CRASH! I am starting to hate ATI. I've had to RMA 0 nvidia cards dating back to the 90's and a TNT2 Ultra. I've purchased 2 ATI cards and the first one had to be RMAed and it's looking like this one may have to be too.

Oh my freaking flying spaghetti monster! Now it's restarting the drivers every 30-40 seconds while I'm sitting in windows! It's not going above 48c! This is really driving me nuts. It's not running 3d speeds at 2d voltages or anything, it's just going insane.

I have one PCI-E video card and one PCI-E motherboard. Now, if this were AGP I'd be good to go, but nope.

Here's something that is fairly interesting. According to ATI tray tools I have no free video or texture memory.

Ok apart from the obvious making sure its clean and no dust trapped anywhere make sure the hsf is making good contact with the chip etc check for loose screws dont titen them to the point of crunch and damage but just make sure its finger tite at least or maybe risk titening it a notch with a screw driver as some people have reported overheating problems on brand new cards and found this to be the problem or maybe u could remove it and but some arctic silver compond on it. also make sure the air vent isnt blocked some people forget to remove a 2nd metal plate for the fan exaust.

It crashes at 45c. I have atitool set up to go into dustbuster mode (5000rpm) when it hits 70c. Strangely, it never crashes in dustbuster mode. It usually crashes when the fan is barely audible, which means it's no more than 55c according to my fan settings. The thing went haywire yesterday and changed the settings somehow to turn off the fan....and it didn't crash. It changed the fan settings to 0% above 50c after a crash. However, with the fan off, no crashes. I turned the fan back on, and it crashed about 30 seconds later after cooling off. Did I mention it had been fine for a few weeks and many hours of oblivion before it went nuts? Oh, and that it was fine for a few days after I cleaned the drivers 3 times?

If its worked fine since you got it then I would doubt its anything in the bios causing it!

More likely its just a heat issue and its been cooked and it just wont like running now without issues! Just send the bugger back!
