System Specs

Thank you y eye!

* This looks like just the kind of review I want to see, especially comparing gaming on this new OS platform, using BOTH of the "Big 2's" video cards on the SAME games!

This is because I tried VISTA finally, hands-on yesterday while shopping @ BEST BUY w/ a buddy of mine & surely liked it.

(I didn't think I would like VISTA as much as I did, but, "lo & behold"... 'miracles happen' lol!)

AND, the entire OpenGL vs. DirectX 9/10 'conundrum' on VISTA interests me greatly...

Yes, MS did relent (sort of) on letting OpenGL gaming run on VISTA (just found this out the other day, well, I did hear about it here earlier than that, but never got details)

HOWEVER... now, I have them, & HOW it is that MS did it! Above all, I am not operating on partial or incorrect information either... I hate that.

(ICD layers & 3 diff. methods in fact - some software emulated, others direct from vendors own ICD layers etc.))...

I also found out via my own 'research' into lib dependencies, that OpenGL.DLL from MS has ALWAYS had calls to DirectDraw (DDRAW.DLL) via looking @ it here on Windows Server 2003!

Thing is, I saw something VERY LIKE THIS, & YEARS AGO on 3dFx Voodoo's GLIDE, via the same method I used to determine this here...

BUT, w/ MS' stuff? Well, I never KNEW Ms' was doing the same though, in using DDRAW.DLL calls in THEIR OpenGL.DLL dynamic link library, even though I have been a gamer & coder for years now!

This just goes to show you, lots I still don't know 100%... it happens, lol!

(This field is WAY big... tons of details/facts & more to be aware of, much less keep @ the forefront of your memory in all of its detail as well!)

The reason for my looking @ OpenGL.DLL was 110% PURE curiousity!

That came after seeing the explanation folks in that thread gave me, & the URL's they pointed to... & also that Microsoft's OpenGL.DLL implementation is software-emulated, which explains a great deal as to WHY vendor ICD layers over OpenGL.DLL by MS are SO much faster - they let their hardware handle it DIRECTLY, going straight @ the hardware, instead.

Funny part is, I always thought "DirectX" & yes, DirectDraw WAS that - a straight 'pass thru' to the hardware, blowing by HAL restrictions etc. (here I could be wrong though).

It's interesting to myself @ least, & somewhat distressing, but it does work still, which is what I cared about because I like IDSoftware games, & they use OpenGL!

P.S.=> Anyhow - thanks, off to take a read now! apk
