Samsung to Show USB LCD at CeBIT

Samsung will unveil a new LCD that can be connected to a PC via an integrated USB port, according to an article published at heise.de. When connected to a PC via USB 2.0, the 19" Syncmaster 940UX using PVA panel and 1280x1024 standard resolution, appears as a removable storage device in Windows, which contains a setup routine that installs a virtual graphics card as well as a USB display driver. While a USB-connected LCD cannot be used as primary monitor, the new approach allows users to connect up to six LCDs (and up to three virtual graphics cards) as extended monitors to their PC. Unfortunately connecting multiple displays to USB ports is highly CPU dependent, and Samsung recommends a dual-core processor with a clock speed of at least 2 GHz. The Samsung 940UX could become available during the first half of 2007 and should cost less than 430 Euros (about $560).

Ok, at first, I thought this was cool, until I read it cant be used as a primary monitor. Basically, this is stupid, even if it could be used as a primary display. I dont really see a need for this or a use, even with a quad qx6700 with an 8800gtx and stuff....bad move Samsung...

well think about this say you need a lot of displays, such as a booth or something. this way you can use 1 computer to control up to like 10 displays (2 for the pci-e cards and 2 for each extra one plugged in). makes controlling lots of screens easier to control.

this is a very good idea, just imagine the uses and the future potential it holds no doubt Samsung already has and i expect to see phones and etc that will be able to take advantage of this new lcd connection.

Even if USB was fast enough, it would still not be as efficient as VGA or DVI wich goes through the graphics card.

Thank you C.Ash. My point exactly, and Im not referring to gaming. However, I see Kenny's point, which in that case, ok maybe it would be a good idea. However, this is still all to weird and strange.

USB is fast enuogh for lower resolutions I would think. So for the example of multiple displays howing videos and such I think it would work. Or even for various artist who want a third or fourth screen just to have a reference picture on, or something to read, or any countless other things. I don't see anyone gaming or watching HD video on them.

But I do see people with phones, laptops, and need for multiple screens using them.

This is UNACCELERATED graphics. But that's OK for 2D desktops, like an extended display for your email box, IRC, skype, etc. Marvelous idea. Imagine pluggin in, via USB, a mini-display that u use for monitoring CPU temps, or Winamp.

All the naysayers should think very carefully about their lack of imagination... and where it comes from.

wouldnt it be 8 screen porn ? you have 2 DVI imputs on your Vid Card for the other 2

anyway, theyd be good for leet rig points, a wall of USB secondary monitors

I can RDP into a machine with 512kbit upload, so I guess USB 2.0 will be more than enough for normal work.

I can not find complete specs nor manuals for these monitors. One reference to the 940T @ 20ms. But just a minute gentlemen what is a virtual graphics card?

im guessing its a graphics processor that does not physically exist. The graphics are being rendered by the CPU. So the processing/rendering of images occurs only virtually (aka in software)
